When a flare nut wrench rounds off the fastener the jaws have sprung open. So, the stronger the better. The strength is determined by the metal. So, this is one tool where spending money always pays off.

The bottom one covers the sides of the nut better than the top

well I bought a kit like the one on the top, (they were in rebate so ) …
I would had prefer the bottom model with 6 contact face, but I got a top model with 5 faces and 6 corners instead …

anyways it is surely better than the standard 2 faces wrench !

I personally like the design of the older (bottom in pic) wrench. I’ve taken apart some old rusty junk with this set, and have done so on fitting damaged by someone else.

I haven’t tried these out and couldn’t find any reviews, but it looks brilliant: http://www.xforcetools.com/products/hexforce

It wraps completely around the nut. Just brilliant. I just hope it’s as good in practice as the idea. Some just aren’t, like the Pocket Hose for instance. Brilliant idea, a garden hose that you can fit in your pocket or something, but it has hundreds? of horrible reviews. So if someone here wants to bite the bullet and buy this thing and tell us about it, tell us about it. Just a brilliant idea.

The snap on wrench is based on their “Flank Drive” design. Which of course quite a lot of companies followed and coined their own name. It’s designed to NOT grip the edges of the “Nut” but instead grabs just below the point.

With the actual hand wrenches? I’ve not found their equal. With the line wrenches? I’d take the snap on with the flank drive. The steel is more ‘dense’ and reduces the flex of the tool on the fastener. (It’s less likely to expand and then round off corners).

Keeping in mind that everyone has their own opinion, and none are really right or wrong. It’s just personal preference.

                    S-
