Hey guys, I have a problem with my 02 Nissan Altima 2.5L
When driving between 2k and 3k RPMs I hear a noise kind of a knocking noise which is constant, I mean the frequency doesn’t change as I speed or increase the RPMs! I’t always the same! I have no idea where it’s coming from, I can also reproduce the noise without driving, just by pressing on brakes and the gas at the same time to get it up to 2k RPM and I hear the noise. I know I’m burning a lot of oil so I wonder if piston rings can cause the noise!

Any ideas? Please help! Thank you!

PS: the noise has been there for a while, thicker oil didn’t help, lucas didn’t either!

Also I noticed that it becomes louder and more intense after a long ride, when the engine gets really hot! When it’s colder I don’t hear it as much!

Dont keep the car in drive and while your on the brake and accelerator, doing so puts load on the engine, transmission and will cause an overheat dinvr the car is not moving forwards you dont have any air going through the radiator and the fans can only remove so much heat.

Put the car in Park or Neutral(in a manual) and get the RPM to the area by using the accelerator alone
Only use the oil which is recommended

Now how many miles on the car?

Does the car have drive by wire or is it a throttle cable type system?
If it is a throttle cable, open the throttle valve manually where it meets the throttle body.

This way you can hear where abouts the noise is coming from.

If the car is in neutral at 2k RPMs it doesn’t make the noise, only in drive or reverse! It has 140k miles and it has a throttle body so I guess a throttle cable type system

Both drive by wire and cable systems have throttle bodies

Look for something like this around the throttle body
If you see a cable you can manual adjust the speed by pulling the cable gently.

If you see electrical wires like this you have a drive by wire.

                Is the car an auto?

could be transmission mounts but best wait for a chap that knows more about cars to answer.

But since the noise only happens when the transmission is in Drive or reverse and having power power put into it, it might be something involving the transmission or around it.

Also make sure the wheel lug nuts are all tightened correctly.
They can make a clacking sound when the car is being driven

You didn’t say how many miles are on the car but since it is an 02 you probably have about 140k mi. How fast is the knocking? Is it a couple times a second or is it more like a rattle? The frequency of the sound is a big clue to it’s source. Piston rings don’t make sounds. It could be the timing chain slapping against the cover. I believe that that engine has a hydraulic tensioner on the timing chain. When the chain wears it gets longer and the tensioner adjust to try and keep the correct tension on the chain. It’s possible that the tensioner can’t keep the chain tight because of low oil pressure between 2-3k rpm. When the engine speed increases the pressure builds up and the tensioner tightens up the worn timing chain. There are plastic guides inside the cover that can break when the chain slaps them, then the chain starts slapping the cover.
That engine also has variable valve timing and that system might have a fault. The can get gummed up over time and the solenoid and valves can fail. That could cause the noise in that one limited RPM range. Do you only hear the noise when accelerating and decelerating or is it constant?

It might be worth an inspection underneath to make sure there isn’t anything loose. If an exhaust hanger is broken and the exhaust runs close to the subframe, it could be hitting it under load conditions the drivetrain will move. So you should also be looking for anything stationary that’s close to the engine or transmission. Other than that, all you can really do is confirm whether it’s specifically engine related or not.
