      Hi Eric
Like a title says what is hapening with Liquid petrol gas in America? I am a installer and servicer of lpg systems in Serbia so want to now that. Just have watched “A word on hybrids” and you dont mention
that like some solution for gas price. Here in Europe tng is very common solution for expensive drive couse you give a twice more miles for same amount of money. Do you have any contact with cars with Lpg system installed? Is there a demand for that system? Also do you have infrastructure (station) for filling tng? I want to find out more about this…
Thank you and continue the excellent work

I didn’t mention LPG because as you pointed out, it’s not as popular here in the states. I have heard from several people in Europe that say the same thing as you about LPG being used more there. Honestly, I have no experience with LPG, but I would like to learn more. I do know someone that may be able to give you more information. Here’s a link to his site.

My limited experience is this. LPG is used here in the states mostly for some truck fleets and widely for forklifts in warehouse enviornments. There is lots of fear about refueling with LPG in the US and there is no real public LPG refueling infrastructure. Recent articles I’ve read are talking up wider usage of LNG fueled vehicles. In a recent issue of Fortune magazine there was an article that spoke of a joint venture of a company in China with a US company to build 50 LNG refueling sites for the purpose of servicing LNG powered tractor trailer vehicles that are becoming increasingly cost effective for fleets to purchase and operate. It seems to be gaining speed and growth since the recent discoveries of the vast natural gas deposits,Marcelus Shale etc. I think Honda had a small fleet of LNG cars operating in California with the state as the users. Not positive.

I worked in the alternate fuel business here in Canada for over twelve years. I used to really enjoy the job as most of the conversions were custom fit. I made most of my own wiring harnesses and sized and adapted most of the components. Digging into factory wiring was a real challenge. We had to find a way to disable fuel pumps and or injectors to allow engines to run on gaseous fuel, not to mention finding ways to trick the gasoline electronics to think the car was running on gasoline while running on propane/natural gas.

We did have some technical help from the utilities until newer electronics made this profession much more difficult to trick more sophisticated electronics. At first we had one O2 sensor, then two, then four and we had to simulate them operating they way they would on gasoline or the MIL light would turn on and fuel trims were all over the map. When you switched to gasoline after running on the alternate fuel the car would stall and run like crap until it relearned. Then we had to simulate injector activity as newer electronics started monitoring that. We had to install timing controls to take advantage of the higher octane of the gaseous fuel. As cars got more compact we had problems finding room for storage to make the conversion viable.

My point of all this crap is that conversion prices kept rising and finally hit the moon.Refilling infrastructure was sparce. It was no longer a cost saving alternative to gasoline. So it’s use has all but ceased accept for areas where taxis are prevelant such as airports.

The only companies that made money were Impco,Landi-Renzo and Autotronics. We now have injected propane systems available and it seems to work well but i’m too frazzled to start it all over again.

Your experience lends truth to a belief that I’ve long held that the auto makers and the oil industry work hand in hand behind closed doors to keep their profitability at maximum levels and consumer choices to an expensive minimum.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is essentially a petroleum gas that has been converted to a liquid.
Its a mixes of two gas, propane and butane. Lpg have many uses, often use like a motor fuel on petrol cars and trucks…
