What does the 1st gear 2nd gear mean?

I’m new to the site and wondered what the gear and karma thing next to the persons id mean? How does someone move from 3rd to 4th? Is karma good karma or bad? How does that work? Great site! Super idea putting people together to solve problems in real time.

Karma is when someone on the forum thanks you for something. The gear thing is calculated by post count, the higher the count the higher the ‘gear’. It’s just a way to keep track of your time spent on the forum.
