It’s a pretty open ended question I know but one I think it would be interesting to know the answer to. The main reason I ask is because when I started in this field I was very enthusiastic about working on cars and not only did I want to work on cars at work but I also loved coming home and working on my ‘project car’. I’d say that lasted about 5 years. Nowadays when I’m done working on cars I’d rather do something else. Don’t get me wrong I don’t have any animosity toward repair work I just don’t have the same passion for it that I did when I started out. So I guess the part ‘B’ of my question would be, are you sick of working on cars yet? If not why? If you are, why? And what do you do instead of working on cars to keep you getting up in the morning. I look forward to your responses.

Well Eric i have bin in the trade for 3 years now and still love my jobs, love turning a wrench, go in with a smile on, i have bin doing project trucks or car my whole live with friends, family, ect..
right now im working ona 2001 ford explorer SOHC engine where im going to replace the timing chains in this engine, its all fun for me and intresting, tho im one of the few younger techs in the trade and i dislike engine, i have no intrest in it, i wanna work on transmission and diesel’s, i know enuff about the duramax, power stroke and cummins.
the way i view it is, now a days if you dont like your job you can always go back to school and try something else, right now with the world in a cluster f*ck prob not a good idea but in a few years ye try changing:)

        just my 2 sence!

Unfortunately I am not in a situation where I have spare time I currently work full time at a shop part time at another and am also a full time delivery driver at night I also have a fairly successful side repair business that I do at night I average 3 hrs of sleep a night and 1 day off about every 10 weeks so not that I don’t love my tech jobs but when I do have time off it is not time for mechanic work … However it always seems that that one day is when every1 of my friends breaks down and I end up working anyway lol

I sleep. When I get up in the morning, I look forward to when I can go and sleep again. My project car has been sidelined, not able to make enough money to work on it and it looks like I will be needing a part time job to supplement working as a technician.

Usually when i get home from work, i have zero energy to do anything, which is going to be rough for me seeing as we have a baby on the way.

To relax on the evening i am home, i tend to listen to some new age music. That helps me wind down allot.

But apart from that, the majority of my free time is helping out on the ETCG website and spending time with the wife.

I am still very enthusiastic about my profession but am increasing finding it harder to help people out by doing side work. I just like to be lazy on my days off. I keep making plans to be somewhat productive (like planning for the last 3 weeks to wash my Jeep) but when i wake up im like “blahhhhh”.

Guns-I go to the range and I also reload my own ammo. I have a 1991 Ford Explorer with axles from a 1974 Bronco and 35″ tires. Thinking bout swapping the Bronco axles for fullwidth axles, D60 rear and fullwidth high pinion D44. Used to have a 1984 Ford Bronco II with an SEFI 5.0/C4/atlas 1-ton axles and 43″ tires. Kinda miss it but I have just as much fun in my explorer and dont have to haul it everywhere.

I work 14, 12 hour days, and have 14 days off.
I tend to travel a lot since i live so far from my friends and family, i work on the house, my car, and play video games.
Right now my project on my car is sorting out the effect of cold weather on my air suppression and why its working intermittently.

I relax, or sleep, shop for tools, drink beer and maybe….just maybe work on something like a side job, I have no projects anymore, cant afford em, just my own cars i work on when i have to, after turning a wrench all day i just wanna sit around, im tired and sore, with a baby on the way Im sure 8 hour days will turn into 11 or 12 hours and sleep will be almost non existent, but ill do it to support my family, Ive been in this trade professionally almost 6 years now and am already feeling it in my joints, neck, shoulders, constant lethargy, some weeks I get burned out and do the jobs but just go through the motions and end up cursing, smoking like half a pack at work and being in a bad mood. But at the same time I still enjoy what I do because nobody would wanna deal with this guy behind a desk all day.
