1999 to 2003? Seems most of the trans problems seen here are those years.
Mine is a 97. I asked about the firm’ish shifts. Supposedly customers complained about this so they did something in 1999 to make the shifts smoother?What did they change internally or in the PCM? Something with accumulators, clutch packs, or…?

not sure specifically what happened but my guess is that the build quality took a dive due to the need for economical engineering. Honda automatic transmissions were problematic before then as well but I do agree that those years were probably the worst that they had, and it cost them quite a bit. Still it wasn’t terrible I don’t believe that they were nearly as bad as some other manufacturers were and have been for a very long time. I find it’s mostly a problem with the Accords and the Odyssey vans. Honda makes good standard transmissions, but personally I would not get a Honda of that generation if it had an automatic transmission.
You are correct, people wanted softer shifts. When you do that the clutches apply slowly and wear quickly. But it wasn’t so much that the clutches wearing out as it was that the transmission designs didn’t allow for the extra wear. They didn’t have removable pans or replaceable filters. This had been previously satisfactory but couldn’t cope with the added material entrained in the fluid. So, the transmissions plugged up and quit working.
