The oil filter on my EJ204 engine has started to leak
I got the car used with 73,000km on it and now it has 77,000km and the oil filter has started to leak which is causing some light smoke as the oil is dripping onto the exhaust.

May be hard to see the drop of oil due to the shitty camera phone pic

It looks from the photo to be the usual screw on oil filter unit ( rather than a canister type) so I would expect the oil leak will be from failure of the seal on the top of the filter unit(see photo in the link). I would not expect the filter housing itself would be faulty. Whoever fitted it probably did not bother to lubricate the seal with oil before fitting and he may have distorted the seal when screwing it into place and probably has over tightened it as well. It is also possible that the filter was never properly tightened when intitially installed and is leaking under pressure because it is now just too loose on the mounting.

In any case it is not a big issue. Just get the engine oil and oil filter changed and as long as the new oil filter is properly installed (because an 8 yo girl could do it) you should not have any issues in future. If you purchased the car used it is always best to have the engine oil and oil filter changed straight away in any event. You mentioned you had now done 4000 kms since purchase so you should do it now.

No big deal. Buy a new filter. problem solved.
One thing to avoid is cheapo oil filters like Fram.

Also when installing a new filter, make sure the old gasket isn’t stuck to the engine. The new filter has it’s own built-in gasket (rubber O-ring) and having two on there would invite a leak. Also make sure to clean around the area where the filter meets the engine and even some around that so no little pieces of dirt fall in while installing the new filter.

Not sure if this is the “right” thing to do but I always rub a tiny amount of oil onto the new filter O-ring before installation so it is a bit easier to remove next time.

When you tighten the new one, do not use anything but your hand to tighten. Just snugging it like 1/4 turn once resistance is felt.

The oil was changed before I got it according to the sticker and was due for the next change at 78,000km, but I did change the oil at 75,000km but the oil filter would not come off by hand and I did not have a good oil filter wrench tool.
And to get access to the filter I need to drop the entire bottom engine guard.

Getting subaru to fix it on friday

Crap like this is why I don’t trust mechanics, while yes there are good ones, the bad ones just cause problems for all
