From what I was told the latest car to have good mpg is the Chevy Volt. Is this true? From what I understand there have been better fuel efficient cars in the past which I find hard to believe. Another thing I find hard to believe is the first Mustangs only cause about 3 grand? Is this true? Was 3 grand like 20 grand then? I would think so. Isn’t houses then 30 grand compared to now which is 300 grand?

The Mustang came out in 1964 for the price of $2,320.

In today’s dollars that would be $17, 683.

As far as houses are concerned, don’t forget that real estate is a very local business. Meaning, a house that went for $30,000 in 1964 could possibly be the same amount in blighted areas (or even worthless like in some parts of Detroit) and that same house in San Francisco could be worth millions. And even more in Hong Kong.

        Oh yeah, the Volt.
I would suggest Consumer Report’s Annual auto edition – go to your local library if in the US. Other than that, have a look here.

but the Volt’s high cost probably is not even worth it considering it’s a Chevy?

In college (I graduated in 1970) I traded in a VW bug for a new 1970 Ford Maverick. I don’t remember what the Maverick went for but I had a three year loan and the payments were $33.13 per month.

Back then a very nice three bedroom starter home sold in the 12 to 13 thousand dollar range.

Out of high school in 1964 I had a job and had saved about $1200. On the showroom floor at the Ford dealership was a pumpkin orange Mustang, three speed on the floor with a small V8. Oh, I wanted that car. It still hurts when I think about it.

When the gas price hikes first hit a few years ago, i remember people were looking around for the old Geo Metro 3 cylinder cars because they were getting over 50mpg… lol! People with Expeditions and huge SUV’s couldn’t get enough of them!

              The downside: You’re driving a Geo Metro…

$33 a month must have been $300 a month these days? Maybe not considering a starter home was started at 12 grand huh? How much was gas then?

I know VW was working on a new clean diesel/hybrid car that had a claimed 256 mpg. Weather or not it went any ware is beyond me.
