what am I doing WRONG??

      I am working on a 98 s10 with a 4.3. I changed the lower intake gaskets. I marked the distributor b4 I took it out but some how my mark is gone. I put #1 @ tdc and the rotor is pointing @ the #1 spot on the cap. I try to start it and its poping out of the exhaust. Can anyone please tell me what I may have done wrong or what to look for? Thank You.

        have you tried getting a new wire. the old one may be stretch out. and you removing it just over stretched it too far.

          You can reach TDC on two different events, once on compression and once on exhaust. You need to make sure you are on compression TDC.

                Take out the #1 spark plug and hold your finger over the hole while a friend bumps the starter or better, turns the harmonic balancer (big pully on the bottom front of the engine) clockwise till you feel pressure then stop. The harmonic balancer has a mark on the edge that is used for setting the timing and is at top dead center when the mark is lined up with a little tab that sticks out above the harmonic balancer.

                You can find the mark on the balancer first then hi-lite it with chalk to make it easier to see. The mark will line up with the tab when the piston is at the top on the compression stroke and also on the exhaust stroke so sensing when pressure is being generated in the cylinder is important. On the compression stroke both valves are closed, on the exhaust, the exhaust valve is open.

                    If you have access to a compression tester, just use the piece that threads into the spark plug hole and instead of installing the gauge, put your thumb over the fitting the gauge connects to. Have a friend rotate the crank by hand as suggested and you should feel air pushing against your thumb on the compression stroke.

                    This is similar as what has been mentioned above already.
