Here are some air compressor basics. As others have stated before the air compressor needs to match your tool requirements. This information can be found in your tools owners manual or if you don’t have the owners manual you can google the cfm air requirement of your particular tool. For example an impact hammer has higher air requirements at 90psi than say an air ratchet @ 90psi. A good compressor will be around 1.5HP and have 4.2 to 4.5 at a minimum SCFM at 90psi. The rating of CFM @ 90psi is really the largest determining factor for heavy duty tools and is a good point of reference for an apples to apples comparison of air compressors.

I have Craftsman 33 gallons air compressor. Its ok for weekend car repair but if you are thinking of painting a car or even using it as sander or grinders I suggest you get a bigger one.

          Quoted From dandro:

          I found this one:
          http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1260 … ockType=G6

in the bargain isle at my local Sears shop for $99 so I snatched it up in a hurry. It was missing the hose and the attachments, but in all honesty, those are garbage anyway! I bought a 50ft rubber hose and good to go! It is VERY noisy though but it’s an air compressor I expect it to be noisy.

i have this but with a 15 gallon tank…nothing special but gets er done..cycle times are long and loud,,,but i dont mind because my two kids are even louder….

I have a little 8 gallon campbell and housefield I use at home, it was helpful when doing the engine swap in my truck! Kicked on quite often but did the job. If I was using it every weekend I’d definitely want to upgrade though. It sure hates the cold weather, it’d sputter and blow the breaker when I’d first kick it on at 20 below zero. Had to keep switching it on and off slowly to keep it turning over long enough for the oil to get flowing and run on it’s own

Harborfreight seems to have ok compressors for a good price.

Finally, six months later, I purchased my air compressor:

                    http://www.lowes.com/pd_221495-14989-LL … facetInfo=

I haven’t even got it out of the box yet. My neighbors will love me going through the break in process, as I live in a small apartment building. But as soon as I get to use it, I’ll give a review on the beast. By the way, it is NOT fun to unload the thing from the back of your truck by yourself. I hillbillied it. I backed my truck up to a bush, and pulled the thing down into the bush, then slid it off onto the sidewalk. If I didn’t help my neighbors out with all their crap-mobiles (not that mine are any better) I would probably get some major grief. Lesson: make sure your neighbors like you more than the bush in front of the apartment building. 🙂

I have an oil-free 6-gallon Porter-Cable pancake compressor for carpentry work and a 27-gallon Craftsman Professional lubricated stand-up compressor for the garage. I like them both.
