I have done everything I could think of and asked a dozen questions in forums and at the dealer ship really hate to give away a perfectly good truck with an intermittent problem.

Every thing in the fuel delivery system is now new except the injectors When it is running it runs like it is brand new and quite frankly it aught to.

I am astounded how quickly the ability to diagnose a problem with out a computer left the main stream.

Well if any one cares to venture a guess I’d be happy to entertain it!

So does it have some sort of issue?

A tech at work just spent 3 days (not constant) trying to verify an issue with a car. Intermittent means costly to diagnose.

Hey thanks for picking it up..

the list of conditions that it looses power under is long… like different speeds, different weather, cold or up to operating temperature, under load, no load typically if I am on a hwy and it looses power I can feather the pedal till it picks up again, most of the time. but on town roads it’s new trick is to stall in intersections and I practically have to push it out of the way.

          Really thanks again!

Funny, I work with someone who spent 2 days on a misfire on an F-150. He had bout every piece of diagnostic equipment in the shop connected to it. He’s younger than I and he figures I’m from the old school and forgot everything I ever learned. Half way through the first day he asked my opinion as suggested by the Boss. I stood and observed the way it was running and questioned him on what he had done. I suggested that the spark plugs were no good and needed replacing.
He told me that they were Autolite plugs (which I hate) and looked fine so he kept on torturing himself for a few more hours and half the next day until the Boss ordered a new set of plugs and told him to install them. Guess what?. The Misfire was gone!

I just told him that sometimes experience baffles brains. I don’t know exactly what you trucks problem is but I can relate to what you’re saying. Give us some details, maybe someone can help.

It does sound like a fuel delivery problem. Year and engine size would help.

The only thing I did not do was the injectors but when it is running well it is strong as an ox

Thanks for taking a look Wysetech

I have a F-150, so your post caught my eye. I did some looking around and there seems to be a lot of people with your problem. One of the recurring themes I see with that engine is the coil packs get cracks in them, and a lot of the people were not getting codes. I would take them off and at least inspect for cracks. I hope you get this resolved soon.

                    I would follow this link:
                    http://ericthecarguy.com/faq/solving-automotive-performance-issues?start=2#PerformanceDiagnosisNoCodes

I know it takes time, but throwing parts at it cost a lot and at the end takes more time.

I was known for mounting a fuel pump pressure gauge to the windshield and a scan tool beside me for monitoring intermittent problems.

If you get a scan tool with “snap shot’ capabilities and rig a fuel pump pressure gauge for monitoring, get someone to ride with you; be safe while driving!

You Guys are great and very thought provoking.

When I first checked the fuel pressure it was 30lbs.

So I did the fuel pump as the truck has 149K on it.

Then winter set in heavy and I did not touch it as my wife has a new vehicle I drove that when needed.

So here is a list of what I’ve thrown at my F150.

                      New:

                      Spark plugs gap .054 MotorCraft
                      Coil Pack MC
                      Wires MC
                      EGR
                      PGV (PCV?)
                      Fuel Pressure Regulator
                      Fuel Pressure Relay
Fuel Pump (I am now a wiz at dropping the tank as I did it 2 times)
The Throttle is connected via a cable not the computer.
                      Fuel Filter 2 x’s
                      All the fuses are good.

I will go out and remeasure the Fuel Pressure does anyone out there know about testing the
                      injectors?

Keep thinking People!! you are doing great and I do feel that collectively we are getting some where.

                            Hi Dave009,

I am a new DIYer but want to share what I have learned from my automotive experience whenever I can. At the very least, I hope that something I write would spark a new but related idea that another forum members can run with, so here goes-

I have been diagnosing a performance issue on my 1997 Saturn SC2, DOHC, 4 cyl, 5 speed manual trans. I have run many tests that have led me to this point. More recently, I ran an engine power balance test using information from Eric’s video, “How to Perform a Power Balance Test” (my ignition is the DIS design with 1 coil pack per 2 plugs/cylinders) to try to isolate my particular issue. I believe I may have a cylinder misfire with no codes, based on info from Eric’s video, “Diagnosing Engine Performance Issues, Part 1.”

If everything on your ignition system checks out fine (i.e. you have spark, good coils and wires), you can use the power balance test to find a fuel injector issue.

Procedure (as per above referenced Power Balance video):
                            1) Unplug each injector briefly and listen for change in rpms (If no change, you may have found your problem injector).

                            2) use a stethoscope (or a long handled screw driver placed on top of the injector with your ear on the handle end of the screw driver. NOTE: Make sure you are not wearing clothing that can be pulled into moving engine components while doing this test) to listen for the click of the injector. If you hear no click (= no pulse), you found a bad injector.

                            Hope this helps.
P.S.-the above represents quick and effective qualitative types of testing.
