This forum is started by suggestion from one of the forum members, SpawnedX. The idea behind it is to have a place where technicians can talk about their experiences and ideas concerning their careers and profession. Think of it as sort of an extension to ETCG1 were we talk about things that concern us and the automotive industry. This is for technicians only so please don’t post automotive questions here. If you are a technician welcome to this forum, if not please stay behind the yellow line. Perhaps we can start by introducing ourselves.

I’m Eric Cook aka EricTheCarGuy. I’ve worked as a professional technician since 1996 and have been an ASE master technician for the past 15 years. I worked for Acura at the dealer for about 8 years and spent the rest of my time working at aftermarket shops on both imports and domestics. I’m also an Acura certified master technician which I got as a result of my training at Acura. For a brief time I ran a Carx after I lost my job at Acura, that was interesting and challenging in many ways but I did work with some good people there and learned a lot about running an automotive business as a result of that experience. Now I have a successful auto repair show on the internet as well as a successful website and forum. To be honest my favorite job so far has been working as ETCG, it seems my entire career including my termination from Acura has led me to this place and I could not be happier with the result. I suppose that just goes to show you never know where you’re going to end up.

Welcome to the Technicians Only forum, I look forward to getting to know you and your work better.

Hi Ev’rybody! (Hi, Dr. Nick! lol)

Hope I pressed the correct “reply” button. Saw a couple. I’m still learning the new forum format.

For what it’s worth, my name is Jason (Chevypower to y’all.)

Grew up under the hoods of Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Daily Drivers, pickups, and whatever else my dear old dad was working on. My earliest memory is holding a Tq wrench while dad took a picture of me as I struggled to tighten main bolts on the Hot Rod engine. 327 Chevy motor donated from a 1967 Impala, bored 0.030″ over, Comp XE Cam, Scat crank, Holly 750, Generic brand block hugger headers, 1.7:1 Roller-Rockers, NOS factory distributer, and the old man took the heads into his machine shop at work and ported, relieved, and polished them. Said he got 2 shovels full of chips from each head. He also employed a well-kept Chevy builders secret of relieving in such a manner as to make the engine extremely loud. No, I don’t share this well-kept secret. 😉 That motor went into a 32 Plymouth 3 window coupe on a 29 Dodge frame. 67 SS Camaro steering wheel and column, 12 Bolt Moser rear end with 4.11:1’s and 33 spline axles. I beleive that rear end assembly came out of a 69 Chevelle….

After dad gave up the idea of “Pissing away money on Hot Rods and such”, he quickly sold off most of the good tools, stopped doing almost any auto repairs, and left me with no further education at age 9.

I read books until I got my first Hot Rod Magazine subscription my Freshman year of High school. I failed more “book” reports than you could shake a stick at for the simple fact that I used HRM as my “books”.

Tons of welding classes throughout High School.

U.S. Army MOS 63B10, later they changed it to 91B10. Boot camp July-Oct 2007, U.S. Army Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic School Oct-Dec 2007. Stationed in a poe-dunk (that’s Army talk for rinky-dink) postal company (as in US Postal Service) where I was a “Mechanic” between Jan 08 and June 2010.

              Jiffy Lube Oct-Dec 2010

WyoTech – Laramie campus student in Auto Jan-Aug 2011, Diesel Engines and Diesel Fluid power & Electrical classes Sept-Dec 2011. One A, 4 B’s and a C later, and I graduated with a 3.0 GPA.

Hyundai Tech Feb-Jul 2012. That was a fiasco to say the least. Mostly my fault for being green.

Hired at a GM dealer as a Used Car inspection/repair tech on Jul 19th 2012, re-assigned to lube/car wash/vaccuum/shop cleaner/Occasional backup shuttle driver/Gofer this, gofer that Tech sometime in September because the SM said he was short handed. I am also the Dispatcher’s unofficial ‘favorite’. Karma will get him back for me… I hope.

I keep plugging away, trying my damnedest to make myself better. I’m the kinda guy who is never satisfied with himself, and always strives to be better.

Forgot to mention, I find/correct spelling on the internet like you won’t believe. It’s my form of OCD.
Can’t figure out my own misspellings, but everyone else’s stick out to me.

I apologize now if I get insane with spelling corrections. I do try to hold back, but like I said, it’s my OCD. Don’t take it personal. 🙂

Hey. Name’s Bobby. I was a tech at a number of different GM dealers for about 8 years. I worked for Cadillac, Chevrolet and Saturn during my stint. At Saturn I became the VTi and the Hybrid technician and did some of the first serious diag work with the first of the GM hybrid systems on the Vues and Auras.
Looking forward to sharing some war stories with you guys about the times in the dealers.

                              Hey guys, 1st post here.

My name is Sam, I’m from Nebraska. I am ASE, GM, and EPA certified. I just turned 24, and have been at the GM dealer for 6 years. I started here 2 days after I left high school. I did oil changes and small repairs for about 9 months and then is started….I learned as much as I could from whom I ever I could whenever I could! I started taking gm classes, and going to hands on classes a few years ago. I recently took my ase and passed all but 1 with no formal automotive education. I am about the only guy in the shop who jumps all over anything not GM. I like to learn how system works on different cars, amd how they differ from what I’m use to. I hope to become master certified and do gm mark of excellence, I also wish to learn from all of you.
