This forum is started by suggestion from one of the forum members, SpawnedX. The idea behind it is to have a place where technicians can talk about their experiences and ideas concerning their careers and profession. Think of it as sort of an extension to ETCG1 were we talk about things that concern us and the automotive industry. This is for technicians only so please don’t post automotive questions here. If you are a technician welcome to this forum, if not please stay behind the yellow line. Perhaps we can start by introducing ourselves.

I’m Eric Cook aka EricTheCarGuy. I’ve worked as a professional technician since 1996 and have been an ASE master technician for the past 15 years. I worked for Acura at the dealer for about 8 years and spent the rest of my time working at aftermarket shops on both imports and domestics. I’m also an Acura certified master technician which I got as a result of my training at Acura. For a brief time I ran a Carx after I lost my job at Acura, that was interesting and challenging in many ways but I did work with some good people there and learned a lot about running an automotive business as a result of that experience. Now I have a successful auto repair show on the internet as well as a successful website and forum. To be honest my favorite job so far has been working as ETCG, it seems my entire career including my termination from Acura has led me to this place and I could not be happier with the result. I suppose that just goes to show you never know where you’re going to end up.

Welcome to the Technicians Only forum, I look forward to getting to know you and your work better.

I’m Ed. I’ve worked as a GST and tire tech couple years back. Although I might as well been considered an auto tech with the amount of work/jobs I had to do. professionally..its just embarrassing but overall I’ve worked on cars for about 5 years now. Not certified nor formally trained at a school, least yet anyway.

Hello my name is Tommy. I was active duty Air Force from 2002-2012. I wanted to be a mechanic when I went in, but that didn’t pan out. Then at my six year mark tried to cross train into mechanics. Again, that didn’t pan out. So I separated in May 2012 to pursue an automotive career.

I’m about 75% done with a degree. I’m currently attending the GM Automotive Service Technologies program at Southwest Tennessee Community College in Memphis. I have 5 auto classes left. Aside from school, I’m currently studying for the suspension and steering, and brakes ASEs.

I’m currently working at a small mom n pop shop, but hope to get hired on as a technician at Drive Time. Waiting on my background check to come back. Should get the call any day now. This is in a way what’s holding up my ASE progress. The company will pay for them. So I’m holding off on paying the dues until I’m physically working there.

Where I’m at in my automotive career is basically trying to get my foot in the door at a reputable company. Besides my current job, I don’t have any real world/professional experience and don’t want to end up the guy with an accounting degree working at Walmart due to failing to gain experience while gaining the degree/certifications.

Seeing as many of you are experienced/”in the mix” I’m looking forward to having any concerns I may come up with answered here. And BTW, Eric you have some awesome videos! Good work man!

Hello everybody Im Blair a quick funny story about how I wound up here… I was at my shop in the middle of doing a honda steering rack I usually use my HPD to get factory honda manuals however it had been a long time since I logged in and I forgot my password so I started searching around and came across ETCG videos on youtube and Ive been watching non stop for a while now.

Lets see I went to a local tech school graduated in ’09 with what I was told were the highest scores in the program and the highest nocti scores in the state(none of this is suppose to impress anybody). Of course ’08 was the last year they did ASE testing and I would have liked to get those certifications

I started my career working on Buick/GMC vehicles at a dealership did that for a few months before being offered a job in sales that I took. I was a dirty car salesman from January ’10 until October ’12 selling Buick/GMC and used cars. I decided I wanted to get back into the service side of the industry so I took a job at a chain repair center that didnt last long.

BoneYard Racing is the name of my shop strictly speaking we’ve been in business since 2007 but officially since 2011. The majority of the work I do is motorsport preparation roll cages, seam welding, intake and exhaust plumbing on domestic sport compact style cars (turbo dodge, turbo ford, neon, focus, etc) and Honda’s I work on a ton of Honda’s anyway Im finally getting to do what I like for a living. Im not sure what all help Ill be able to offer to you guys but if you have any questions feel free to ask.
