This forum is started by suggestion from one of the forum members, SpawnedX. The idea behind it is to have a place where technicians can talk about their experiences and ideas concerning their careers and profession. Think of it as sort of an extension to ETCG1 were we talk about things that concern us and the automotive industry. This is for technicians only so please don’t post automotive questions here. If you are a technician welcome to this forum, if not please stay behind the yellow line. Perhaps we can start by introducing ourselves.

I’m Eric Cook aka EricTheCarGuy. I’ve worked as a professional technician since 1996 and have been an ASE master technician for the past 15 years. I worked for Acura at the dealer for about 8 years and spent the rest of my time working at aftermarket shops on both imports and domestics. I’m also an Acura certified master technician which I got as a result of my training at Acura. For a brief time I ran a Carx after I lost my job at Acura, that was interesting and challenging in many ways but I did work with some good people there and learned a lot about running an automotive business as a result of that experience. Now I have a successful auto repair show on the internet as well as a successful website and forum. To be honest my favorite job so far has been working as ETCG, it seems my entire career including my termination from Acura has led me to this place and I could not be happier with the result. I suppose that just goes to show you never know where you’re going to end up.

Welcome to the Technicians Only forum, I look forward to getting to know you and your work better.

Hey I’m Ed, I’m an apprentice tech from England. I am about 3 months into my Level 3 diploma and work at a Honda specialist, although we do work on pretty much all car/light commercials.
I was introduced to ETCG by accident at college, when we were looking for a video in youtube about automatic trannys and found Eric’s lesson.
        Any other Brits on here?
I look forward to many an interesting yarn on here

Hey All…I am a 63 y.o. tech from Ontario Canada and have been “staying dirty” since i was 14. I am ASE certified and work in a flat rate, independent shop with 3 other techs doing mostly general repair. After 46 years…YES 46… in the trade I still learn new things every day not only about cars but about business and life in general. It’s been a real roller coaster ride.

I have plenty to offer about the trade, the good and the bad and the ugly as seen from my eyes so if i can be of help ,about anything at all, please ask.

Even though i don’t totally agree with what Eric The Car Guy offers on You Tube it is done very professionally and has people safety in mind while doing repairs.

            Anyway…before i start venting i will say…Gooday for now.

Hi Guys. My name is Tim. I have been a tech for 35yrs in north central Texas. I’ve seen a lot of changes in the field over the yrs. I am ASE cert. I am not impressed by this. My experience is about 90% of customers don’t know what it is. I have also seen lots of ASE techs that just don’t have a clue. I been in this a long time so there are things I choose not to work on anymore. I have seen a lot of ETCG vids and even though I dont agree with every thing he says they are good. Mostly the flat rate stuff. Im not spending all day on elec problem and not be paid for it. Most elec probs can be found in a couple hrs. If it takes longer they have to pay. If they dont want to pay take it to someone else. I’m not tryin to sound like an ass but I deserve to be paid for my time. I worked for Mr. 500 for a few yrs in the early 80s and I learned alot from him. “Sometimes its not enough to fix the car. You gotta fix the customer too”. Words of wisdom from Mr. 500. Some of you old guys should know who this is… Bye for now.

I don’t know how old you are but by the time you hit my age you will find out that you can’t keep up to the grind anymore and end up doing apprentice jobs. I do know who Mr. 500 is. I like to pick and choose my jobs also but it’s too easy for Mr.500 to replace me.

Is it true that everything is bigger in Texas?

Greetings! I’m Konrad from Los Angeles. Long time viewer, first time poster. My experience as a tech spans 12 years. The past 7 years have been spent as a flat rate slave at an Audi dealer. I’m master certified by Audi and have platform certifications for every model and engine in current production. Other certifications include the required stuff from the EPA, and ASE master certification for whatever that’s worth.

                                Hello all !

My name is Jeff and I live in Pennsylvania. I started working on car’s back in the late 60’s before I was even old enough to drive. I worked after school for a guy who had a neighborhood repair shop. He was a Ford Dealership Tech. during the day and after work he came to this little shop he had and worked for himself. I was able to work on a verity of vehicles but the one I most looked forward to working on was the dragster he had ! A “C” gas rail dragster, front engine.
I went into the Army in 1974,and after I was discharged in 1976 I moved out to Portland, Oregon to go snow skiing, a friend from the army was from there. I ended up staying out there for sixteen years before I came back home to Pa. While I was out there I went to MT. HOOD Community College for a two year Automotive Technology Program.1982-1984 After I finished school I went to work at a Chevy Dealership, worked there for a few years. Then I worked at a Cadillac, Pontiac, GMC Dealership. Since then I work for myself mostly , mobile repair ! I was ASE certified in Engine performance, Electrical and A/C !
