Hey everyone, A few days ago my car started to make this real weird sound that is kind of hard to explain. Its somewhere between a moan and a squeal? I opened the hood and followed the sound. I first thought it might be the power steering pump so I put my ear near that but it wasn’t coming from there. I followed it to the other side of my car and the sound is coming from the front driver side. It sounds like its coming from right underneath the air filter but as far as I know there is nothing under there that would make that sound. I took a video of it because I don’t really know how to explain the sound.

Sounds like an Owl has moved in.

Does the noise increase as you increase the Engine RPM’s?

Here is a video Eric made on locating some engine noises –

Lol. No the sound doesn’t increase. I can only hear the sound when I’m not moving. Once I start driving I can no longer hear the sound. I have seen that video and used it to help me try to figure it out but can’t really seem to pin point it. I used a screw drive to listen. The hard part it the only thing in that area is mostly body parts. Not a whole lot of moving parts.

it has to be something that is turning on or off. evap or IAC or something? A/C compressor now that I think of it. That’s a wierd one.

Every now and then when I turn my car off I can kind of here the sound of something (air) leaking and it does kind of sound like its coming from one of the A/C lines but I like in Ohio so its cold as all get out here and I have not used the A/C in probably 4 months? Though the A/C compressor is on the other side of the car?

I am starting to wonder if the noise is due to a vibration or something rubbing.

I would jack the vehicle up, place on jack stands, start the vehicle and CAREFULLY inspect underneath the vehicle if you do not have access to a lift.

+1 with dreamer. Grab hold of objects around that area and lightly pull on things to see if you can get it to stop. I have had several Escorts over the years and it seems they all talk different with

After hearing that noise in your video. The noise to me sounded like your belt tensioner pulley making noise or some pulley driven device.my suggestion
would be to remove your belt or belts and hand spin each device on that belt system to see if anything is tight or noisy. you also may be able
to briefly start the car to see if the noise goes away. before I did that, try the hand spin method first. good luck and keep us posted.

The only reason I suggested the A/C compressor is that is runs when the defrost is turned on, unless you have a separated A/C button. I don’t think the Fords do. But yeh, I would put my hands on components as the noise is happening and see if you can feel the noise or affect it. You could use a mechanic’s stethoscope or even a long screw driver held to your ear and pinpoint where the noise is coming from. Just don’t jam it in any moving pulleys while the vehicle is running, obviously 🙂

Edit: I just saw that you had tried the screwdriver trick. My bad. I had a wierd noise on my Geo Prizm that I was almost certain was a bearing, until I realized that it was doing it at idle when the car was out of gear sometimes. I used the screwdriver and found out it was an engine mount. It was nothing like the noise you have though.

                          Quoted From Drunk32:

What do you mean the air cleaner box?

The air filter box houses the air filter.

Also mebby check the air tube (it connects the air box to the throttle body) for cracks or holes etc, just for kicks.

I will test out the the defrost idea. When I started my car this morning I heard that sound like I always do. After driving the 30 mins it takes to get to my college I got it in the parking lot and just sat there with the car running and I didn’t hear the sound. I don’t know if this only happens when my car first starts I never paid attention to that before. I don’t know if this information is helpful at all. I will once I go to leave school today I will make sure that everything thing A/C related is off then let you know if the sound is still there or not.

So I tried to start the car with no A/C related things on and the sound was still there.
