Weird noise

Hi everyone,

I have a 93 civic si.
just recently i noticed a weird sounds that only happens when i am engaged in gear when i am both accelerating and decelerating . It makes a sound that is similar to a whirling sound or plastic being dragged on the floor but not to that extent; it is more like just a smaller version of that. it sounds more internal. i had my hand on the shifter while is was on gear and accelerating and it felt like something grinding and it gave a faint vibration. I’ve also revved it while i was on neutral and the sound went away.

Now I’ve done some research and i came up with several possibilities and just wanted to know what you guys thought.

I figured it was one of these possibilities:
The transmission is going.
The flywheel is causing it.
or it could be the clutch ( but I just changed it recently)

i don’t know if this would help but when i was in reverse it didn’t make the sound.

I would think if it was a clutch or flywheel issue it would happen in reverse as well. I’m thinking perhaps it might be a countershaft bearing inside the gearbox (possibly input shaft bearing, but again, if so it should do it in reverse also), but that’s really just a guess since I can’t see or hear it.

Ya i was thinking it could of been a bearing of some sort but i didn’t know which one.
Come to think of it. When i was driving it this morning it kinda sounds like a bad bearing whirling around.

Additional info:
When i had my foot on the gas and i suddenly let go the moment right before you hit decelerating the sound would stop.

So foot press down on the gas (sound)
Let go for a moment of coasting (sound stops)
Car engine braking or decelerating (sound starts again)

Have you checked the brake pads and rotors just to be sure? I hope it’s something easy for you.

I’m pretty sure it isn’t the brakes, because whenever I’m just rolling without the gears engaged the sound stops

You said you had the clutch replaced recently. Did your issue begin after the clutch change, or was it there before?

Did you change the clutch yourself, or did someone else do it?

If the problem arose after the clutch replacement, and if a licensed mechanic did the work, I’d take the car back and explain the situation.

It sounds a lot like a transmission input shaft bearing noise. Are you sure it doesn’t make the sound in reverse? What I mean is that the reverse is noisy and whines up with RPM naturally, so is it possible that you can’t hear the same noise it makes in 1st over the natural whine of the reverse gear?

Awhile back there was a run on the forum here of input shaft bearing (ISB) noise, Here’s a link to one of those threads about a 94 Civic, which may have some useful information that can aid your diagnosis and covers the cost and/or labor involved, if that’s what you determine is the problem is.
