Hey everyone, I have an automatic 2010 Ford Mustang 4.0 V6 with >30k miles on it.
i recently had my blower motor go bad, had it replaced, my brakes failed, had it replaced and thats about the only defective things that have happened to it under warranty.
      Now
I hear a knocking sound from either the engine or the front driver side brake area, can’t determine exactly where but its in that area.

Now this knocking sound has happened at weird times. Here are the times it’s happened

      1. When starting i hear the sound for just a second and it stops (its like a loud knocking) This only happened once so far
      2. Driving at a slow rate while turning its happened a couple times
      3. When reversing slowly while foot is on the brakes its happened a couple times as well.

thats pretty much the only times i can remember it happeneing. Now my buddy told me it could be a bad transmission mount, but i don’t think it could be that because wouldn’t it be knocking when shifting also?
I was also thinking maybe the starter bolts may have came lose so when i started the car the starter “wobbled” into place with the flywheel?

My warranty expires in 6k miles and i want to get this fixed ASAP so it’s a free repair!! lol

so a bit of an update and question about this knocking problem.

i made an appointment to drop my car off at ford this week. so we’ll see what it turns out to be. and ford doesnt give a rental car unless you bought the car at their location.

question is that some friends are suggesting that it could be ball joints or the wheel bearing. any input on these ideas?

          thanks!

The ball joints and/or wheel bearing would not expect to make any noise while starting the vehicle up. Typically a wheel bearing will make a “growling” noise when it starts to go bad. This “growling” noise is usually speed dependent as well. So, even at faster speeds, there would usually be some type of indication of noise for a bad wheel bearing. A loose ball joint would provide “play” in the tire. Again, if the same knocking noise occurred just during start-up, I would tend to rule out the ball joint.

Given the relative age and mileage of the vehicle, definitely see what the dealership says. Any concerns or issues should be covered under warranty. I would gently still pursue a loner/rental vehicle. While the vehicle was not purchased at this Ford location, you as the customer still want to experience a great relationship with this Ford dealership. I have found that being patient, polite, and courteous always go a long way in the end. Remember, this dealership will want to service your vehicle after its warranty is up. Obtaining a rental car will help set a great foundation for you with this Ford dealership and help to establish a long-lasting relationship.

All the best. Keep us posted.

ok that makes sense, now it hasnt made a noise at start up since the first time i posted the problem.
it did made the sound when slowly reversing too now, so i guess i can add that situation to the list lol

              but thanks for the info!

99% of new fords recommend 5w-20 oil.. i know a guy who has gone thru 2 motors under warranty in his mustang.. i wouldnt put off gettin it in for them to look at.. and if they give ya the run around. just ask them for the phone # of the districts service manager. to complain too.. they will change there tune quickly usually.. they dont like to have complaints filed against them and there shop.. btw they circled the problem on the front… its a ford..L:D lol

hey now! i’ve heard that one plenty of times but it never gets old haha yea i know it’s a ford, but it’s my ford and i love that car still lol
yea a lot of new fords do call for the 5W-20, i double checked mine and it does call for 5W-30 Syn. and that’s what i’ve been putting in it.

all jokes aside though, here is the update on what’s going on with it.

I just dropped my car off to Ford today, and I hope to hear back from them tomorrow to find out what’s going on and that it’s been fixed. Tomorrow is my birthday and i dont even have my car… A:(
but its the only time i have to drop it off.

getting this problem fixed would be a nice bday gift lol 🙂

Ok so here is the final update about this problem. And it’s making me scratch at the head.

But here is what the guys over at Ford said.
They said that my aftermarket BBK Intake set up was the problem. They said that the filter was too long and when i would turn it would slide a bit and bang against the firewall, thus causing the knocking sound. And at start up it was due to the “shaking” of the filter cuz of start up.

So im thinking of just putting a smaller filter on there so it doesnt make the sound anymore or contacting the guys where i got it from and doing a defect exchange on it. Cuz no one else has had this problem that i’ve asked that have the BBK set up.
