water pump leaking after replacment?

      so i did a full water pump remove and replace on my 2004 pontiac bonnevile 3800 v6 series 2 and after i got it put back toghter and started putting water in it i notice i have a big leak from my pump im assuming that i messed up the new gasket during install?? if anybody has any tips or tricks to share on doing this please feel free to tell me i obviouslly failed would a crushed or damaged gasket cause this issue? thanks in advance for your input im going to hopefully redo it tommrow and have someone help me

        Those pump replacements are as about as easy as you can get unless, like you say the gasket slipped outta place. You might want to make sure that the leak isn’t the hose fittings in the belt tensioner bracket. I have almost been fooled by them before.

          are you sure it is the pump?

          If I remember correctly there is a plastic elbow located above the waterpump that is famous for leaking.

            😆 wyse beat me to it.

            That elbow has probably caused more water pump replacements than anything else on the planet.

              Nice post!

              The only thing I would add is that if you have a leak after replacing the pump then it’s likely something you did. It’s a good idea to go over your work to see if you really did roll the gasket. Keep us posted on your progress.

                i redid the pump this time i opted for the steel gasket from autozone it went back together great and dosent leak with the ghrapite gasket i got with the pump i didnt notice there are guide pins for the pump on the engine side and i didnt use them and thats why it rolled i put the gasket on the pump first and tried to do it the hard way lol
