water pump!!

My mom’s (2000 Hyundai Elantra) started over heating, she took the car to a mechanic near by. The mechanic said it was broken seal on the water pump, major job, $600 to fix. I tow the car home & look it up. The part is $61 for a water pump. I found a few video on water pumps, are there any tricks to make them easier to change it out? And can I just replaced the gasket, instead of the Water pump?

Have you replaced a water pump before? the engine in DOHC if I remember correctly and runs off a timing belt. Hears what to do. Get a timing belt kit, should come with a water pump, timing belt, bearings and seals. (you can get it on ebay) Knock it all out at once. You can buy one of erics timing belt videos its basically the same. The timing marks will be different though. As for the quote of $600 it isn’t to bad. But I know shops that would do it for more or for less. Just remember when it comes to labor you get what you pay for.

A bad/broken seal on a water pump isn’t the same as a bad gasket. The gasket is used to seal the pump to the engine. The seal prevents the impeller shaft from leaking.

I agree with Chris. You want to knock it all out at once. It’s one of those labor intensive deals and while it’s a pretty straightforward one-step-at-a-time operations, you don’t want to have to keep going back in for one reason or another. Aside from the videos, you might want to get ahold of the bolt tightening specs for this car, notes on tensioning the belts, any special gasket sealant they recommend, and be sure to get all the gasket material off the block before you start to replace it with the new one. Crocus cloth and a gasket scraper, maybe some brake cleaner spray would be helpful to have around.

And you ought to check the manual to see if Hyundai recommends a particular coolant type and see if you should put a can of pump lube into the system when you’re all done. I also change the hose clamps to the pump unless they’re in really good shape, check the thermostat (pretty cheap to replace usually), and that’s about it. Check for leaks of course afterwards and if you have a cooling system pressure tester, run it up to 16 pounds and check for leaks.

No,I haven’t change a water pump. But I’ve changed my tempstat & timing belt recently. thankyou for the advice. The videos aren’t showing up on the page for some reason. 🙂

As I mentioned, take it one step at a time and you should be ok. Go down to a parts store or look at Amazon.com for a Haynes or similar repair guide. You’ll probably find that very helpful.

If your going to go threw the trouble to remove the water
pump. Just replace it. does not make sense to just replace
the seal.
