      Hi everyone.
i am currently working on a VS commodore (its a v6 ecotec) the motor has been leaking water profusely, today i did a little more investigating and found that it was leaking from the top of the motor it seems there is a little hole under the intake manifold. i was wondering if this is able to be fixed or would i be wasting my time trying to repair the leak??

      need urgent help!

From what youre describing it sounds like you have a blown intake gasket tho the commodores Im very unfamiliar with so Im not sure how muck work it would take to get it fixed

Im not sure on the photo upload but if its below the intake and if memory serves me right youve got a hole in the block itself which pretty much means engine replacement but again with my lack of knowledge in commodores Im not sure.

you know, now that i think about it, it could be a part of the intake manifold itself, im thinking if i disassemble it, maybe it could be replaced. think i’ll give it a crack tomorrow in the daylight.
thanks for your help, chris 🙂

Could it be a freeze plug rusting out? That can be replaced. I’m not familiar with that vehicle either.

Sounds like you will have to disassemble it to put your eyes on the problem, at least you know where to look. Keep us posted.

hey guys, i pulled the top of the motor off today and found the problem, it was the air intake manifold that had corroded through, i can supply some photos to show you guys exactly what it was if you like!

thanks for the help everyone! 🙂

I’m willing to bet this is a 3800 Series V6 with the plastic upper intake manifold. If it is, this is a common problem. The EGR “Smoke Stack” runs through the intake manifold. Over time it gets hot, and will melt the seal and plastic, resulting in a coolant leak. You will also want to replace the LIM gaskets while you’re in there. The GM Dexcool has a habit of eating the plastic gaskets that were used and will produce another coolant leak.

If this is indeed the case, I would highly suggest you subscribe to this forum http://www.grandprixforums.net/general-tech-discussion/ It has a ton of information on the 3800 based cars.

Here is a great video, that reviews the process.

Please give us the year and engine size. Many Holdens are renamed Chevrolet, Vauxhall or Daewoo cars so some of us may know of the car in our country by another name.

ok I did some research. This model was made from 1995 to 97 and t uses a Buick 3800 series II rwd engine. It looks like a Pontiac with a Buick butt

That’s unfortunate, thanks for the update and feel free to post pics I’d love to see that.

sorry it took so long for the reply, but heres the problem!

NorthEast, you’re completely correct with everything you said in your post. it is the 3800 motor with the plastic cover. i will surely replace anything i can before i put the engine back together.
this is the photo of the enginebay, just incase that gives you anymore hints, i can also upload a photo of the car if you like 🙂

That’s very unfortunate, thanks for posting the pics they really help illustrate the issue.
