Lately it seems that I’ve been getting more negativity in the comments than usual. Rather than taking the time to type out a string of responses, I decided to make this video as my response. I hope those that feel I’ve ‘sold out’ get a better perspective on where I’m coming from, and those that have always supported me are entertained by the video.
I’m sure I’ll see more than my fair share of comments on this one. Should be interesting.

August 15, 2016 at 5:54 pm #865523Haters gonna hate.
Ain’ters gonna ain’t.
Waiters gonna wait.
An unfortunate side effect of the internet is the realization that the people with the least to add to a conversation are usually the loudest. The only thing you can do is prove you’re better than they are and ignore them.
August 15, 2016 at 8:59 pm #865535- It’s free. And, the revenue is used to generate more content, which is also free.
- It’s clearly labelled “sponsored content”. No stealth or guerilla marketing tactics are employed. (I liked the tutorial on how to exit the video or close the browser window BTW).
- My current career is in research, and we have externally fund our work (which includes salary, supplies, equipment, overhead, etc). As money doesn’t rain from the heavens, we joke that “Seek funding” should be added to the scientific method. The process requires a lot of time and energy.
August 15, 2016 at 9:27 pm #865536I like all the Videos here!
Keep up the good work and dont get de-motivated!
Man, i work in a level 3 support and i always have angry people on the phone!
And you still have to look at the people that are happy with your products and hear what they say to improve it! 🙂
August 15, 2016 at 11:56 pm #865547I have been heavy on youtube for gosh 13+ years now. There used to be a channel that I was a big fan of and this uploader would reply to every single negative comment left on his videos. Every time I watched his videos I would cringe seeing him in the comment section with these big long flame-wars going on, I really disliked that. I would recommend that nobody replies to any negative comments, not Eric, not the viewers, just let the negative comments be.
A lot of times people leave YT comments very quickly and without much thought. If you really get into a discussion with them they often will not back up their negative comments.
On the latest AutoZone video I saw a comment that I found particularly annoying, this guy wrote this long drawn out goodbye to Eric and swore he would never come back. He had like 20 crappy videos on his channel and a few subscribers, his comment just reeked of narcissism and self-centeredness. I wondered “Why in the world does this man think that I care about him leaving the channel?” I really think that he was just maturbating his own ego. ETCG does hard physical labor to produce these videos, and this man just sits at his desk in the air condition and wants to push people around and leave negative comments – I just find that highly agitating. I wrote him a reply about how inconsiderate he must be, but as I often do, I just deleted my reply and let him be.
Also remember that only a very very small fraction of viewers leave comments, very small. I mean you are talking half a million views for a few thousand comments.
When you really think about it tho, criticizing youtube comments is almost comical. Come’on dude- they’re youtube comments. Complaining about them is like going to the wildest bar in town and telling the drunks to quiet down and get serious. That goes for all comments on the internet, you have to take them with multiple grains of salt.
August 16, 2016 at 2:08 am #865560I’m not as likely to review a product from Amazon they I enjoy, but you can bet I’ll write a review when I think it’s a piece of shit.
I think the same logic applies.
August 16, 2016 at 5:02 am #865602Eric, sponsored content is a fact of life in all forms of media. I’ve been consuming automotive media since I knew it existed, and I have seen every kind of sponsored content out there. The Autozone and Pick ‘n Pull spots are far less offensive than all of the “reality” shows out there. “We got this crate motor for Project Low Buck Daily Driver from our friends over at World Products and bolted on a Weiand 8-71 blower with two Demon carbs. It’s reliable, affordable, and will make about 650 horsepower. Let’s see what Buddy has for us at this week’s Summit Performance Marketplace.” Nothing like a half hour’s worth of infomercial with commercial breaks every five minutes.
You did a great job making your videos enjoyable and informative, and didn’t oversell anything. In fact they made me more likely to visit both of your sponsors. If it made you a few bucks to support ETCG, even better. Keep up the good work.
August 16, 2016 at 6:29 am #865609I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment of the sponsored videos – they may be paid for by someone else, but just like with your tool reviews, there is always good content there. I don’t think I ever looked at the video comments on youtube until I watched this video – man, there sure are a lot of trolls on there – and they will complain about literally anything! Some don’t like the sponsor, some don’t like the presentation, an overabundance of folks pick on the thumbnail image, more than a couple of off-color remarks on your friend… it’s sad.
You make great videos – we all like some more than others, and we all have our favorite sort of topics, but they always have good info in them, and your website is one hell of a reference!
Keep up the good work, and don’t feed the trolls!
August 16, 2016 at 5:42 pm #865637without this forum, those youtube comments are his only form of feed back.
August 16, 2016 at 11:48 pm #865658Well… I know I’m not the most active member here (I’m exactly the opposite) and I avoid sometimes to comment so I don’t get missunderstood but after seeing this video I had to comment…
As I posted in another topic I’m from across the pond (Portugal), I worked with cars for a very long time (no I’m not a technician, I work in performance and accesories to auto industry), and I’m a subscriber of your channel for a very long time.
It’s has been a long journey, and I’m glad I took part, in some way, in that. From the old and packed shop, to the new and awsome one. All the equip you wish (well almost all 🙂 ). From a single guy with a simple camera, to a multicamera and a Cameraman (wich does a great work in my opinion).
I can not imagine the hours on end you have spent with the channel. The time you spent must be accounted in years not hours probably. I have learnt a lot, and I mean a LOT, from your videos, and learning and having fun at the same time is awsome. and you provide us wih both.
People don’t undestand the costs and time to build something. New equipment, staff wages, all legal stuff, rent, etc.
So it’s normal for you to go for some Advertising. It’s normal and I support you on that. If I am the biggest fun of all of them? No, I’m not, some are not my first “choice” but I watch them anyway for 2 reasons: 1st I know it will be a quality video, 2nd: I know I’ll be helping you and it’s the way I thank you in the only way I can. Watching them, at least I know it will have some revenue to you.
If I would love to have 2 or 3 videos of repairs and Faremont project a week? Of course I would. But I know that for us to have a video of 1 hours or 2 of 45 mins for example, tou probably spent 2 or 3 days filming it plus a few days editing it.So yes, I’m a subscriber and always will because you do an amazing work helping others.
So after this long introduction what I have to say?
Keep doing it brother! We who value your work will always be by your side and supporting what you do to keep the whells rolling.
Thank you very much for your work and to the haters?… F**K them, let them do better to see if they can!

Truth of it is Eric, there are some people out there that thrive off the anger you channel at them through the internet. I have a friend that is like that and it drives me nuts sometimes with the things he likes to put his two cents into. I asked him one time why he does it and he says “because it is funny how much a person can get angry over a text on a screen. It is funny for me to read the responses because in the end, that is all it is. Very intelligent combacks at times that I keep for later use. It’s just fun”. A good way to deal with it from personal experience is to agree with them. Make it boring for them to look back to and read. I can understand your frustration with it don’t get me wrong. If it is a valid point I understand but when it isn’t well it is hard to keep cool. Keep your head up man your videos are always some of the best ones out there regardless of what others say.August 17, 2016 at 9:44 am #865697I haven’t looked at the comments on any of your videos yet but I do understand what you mean. I do have a thought on this though. Maybe they aren’t haters, but more or less they love your channel and what you do and are very afraid things will change. Some are afraid of change, but some fear something much different based on experience. I’ve seen channels where they started out very humble, and then the money started coming in, soon after they started doing sponsoring content where before you know it, they were endorsing products you know that they knew are crap. Eric, there is an honesty and a humbleness about you and it is very evident on this channel. There really isn’t that much out there that I can say that about. I think many fear your channel going down that road. I don’t see you doing that, but it’s happened before.

That’s what I use the Thank You button for.
Eric, thank you for all of your videos. They represent an amazing amount of time, effort, talent and information. This site is a wonderful resource and community, which are rare on the internet.
August 20, 2016 at 5:00 am #866004I commented on the video (this one) but I’ll say it here too.
I don’t see a problem with sponsored content that provides real information. Like I said on the video, all of that information you provided is genuine advice that would be good at ANY auto parts store. If a person dislikes AutoZone for whatever reason that can take that same advice and apply it at Napa, Advance, etc….
You weren’t recommending anything that was unnecessary or anything could only be done there. AutoZone happened to sponsor it, that’s the only difference.
There are lot of very critical people online that may not give the same criticisms face to face.
