I have recently bought a 2006 307 2.0 Liter petrol engine 5speed manual. It had one owner previously from new and has 38,000 miles on the clock. Very good condition and according to the handbook it has been serviced correctly. I noticed when starting from warm (not hot) that the top of the engine has a rattle for 2-3 seconds and then settles down. The car had an oil change and filter just before I picked it up and the grade was 10w 40. I have just changed the filter (installed a factory Mann brand) and put Total 5-w 30 semi synthetic in it as specified in the manual. The engine seems clean enough under the cap etc and the Franchise dealer has suggested a scan and flush and new oil. I dont think this will achieve a great deal except make them $200 better off. I am a bit concerned that this rattle may cause some issues down the road. The car has a 100 day warranty and I have emailed the dealer (to create a paper trail) and they suggest speaking to the agents for advise and keep them in the loop. Any thoughts would be appreciated, I know the 5w30 oil is pretty thin so some extra noise may be normal but I just want to be sure.

Can you post a video of the noise.Use the correct oil
weight and viscosity. sounds like someone has been covering
up the problem with thicker oil.

Thanks will do, it does have the correct oil in it now and I suspect it has done throughout most of its life as it has been serviced by the franchise dealer. I think I will have them (the franchise agent)check it out as it is still under the dealer warranty (100 days) and they (2nd hand seller) are happy for me to do this. Will try to post a video in the next couple of days.

Just to clarify..the noise didn’t start untill you changed the oil or you change the oil because of the noise. I’m wondering why the dealer would use the wrong grade of oil? Also you mentioned it does this warm, not hot. How about when its cold?

it sounds like the cams are out of position slightly so you need to have the timeing checked. on your probably find you need a cambelt just because of the mileage is low doesn’t mean it doesn’t need a cambelt it is a 2006 I did one about 12 months ago

It’s probably a valve lifter that’s refilling. Not a big or even a small deal. Our 1996 Honda Odyssey does this once a week for a minute or two and has been doing so for 10 years.

Thanks to all who sent in replies, I took the car into the Peugeot Dealership today and the technician tells me (after having a listen) that this model tends to do this. The Variable Valve Timing mechanism has to refill with oil when the engine starts, with synthetic 5w30 it is VERY slippery when hot so tends to drain right away from the components. For some reason it doesn’t rattle from cold, only when left for an hour and then restarted. Anyway I have it in writing that it is normal on this model. The cam-belt was changed last year so that’s all fine as well.
