Got a VW Passat this week with a P0171. This car has an engine cover that incorporates the air filter and MAF sensor. You can’t remove the cover and check the engine running due to the MAF location. This was an inter cooled turbo car. About 12 feet of potential vacuum leak, most of it out of sight. I used the evap smoke tester. Placed it in the air boot just after the MAF. Used wet shop rages to seal around the hose. I was able to verify no leaks in all that piping. Found leaking PVC parts. Replaced and rechecked with smoke. Fuel trim in now 0, was +25%. I fixed a VW 🙂 Week before I was able to use it to find a leak on a 3.0l vin U Ford Taurus, bad oring. If your shop has a smoke machine use it for more than evap work.
A vid about tips and tricks with smoke would be cool
I have been staying dirty, I just would like a bit more dirt.
