I have posted this a long time ago and never got any help or a reply so i am posting it again.

My girlfriend has a 1999 Bug (the one in my signature) i want to disable the airbags for reasons i have discussed on the forum before. Problem is i cannot find the Air Bag fuse the fuse box is labeled in symbols in which none illustrate airbag the thread is “1999 VW Bug” in which i post a diagram of the fuse boxes.

      please can someone help

Hello I have a Beetle myself and once worked at a vw dealership i think if you are just wanting to remove the air bag fuse it will also cut out some other accesories I will have to check with the shop manual to make shure. I will let you know I really dont recomend dissabeling the air bags for they are part of the suplementry restraint system the only reason you are allowed to dissable the air bag is when you are notaller to 4 feet 5 inches. I will get back to you whane I get the chance. another way to cheat the airbag system is to disconect the yellow conector under the drivers seat. be carefull to hold the shorting tab as you disconnect as you could trip the airbag if not properly done

yes yellow connector under driver seat it has 2 wires on it and there should be a purple or grey shorting bar that you pull back to disconect the conector a trick to get under the seat is to remove the two philips or 2 torx t 15 or t 20 screws on the seat track hiding covers oh and there are little round plugs on the back of them when the seat is all forward, then slide seat all the way back and there will be a allen key with a 10 mm nut take that bolt off from the end of the middle of the seat track and then lift on seat adjuster lever and slide the seat past back then you will be able to gently tilt the seat bact towards the passenger rear seat then will be able to see the conector better usually cliped under seat. now knowthat this will disable you air bag but lave the light on in the cluster hopefully that helps you onhow to disable airbag system so they wont deploy in event of an accident but you should not tamper with safety system of you re vehicle

If you plan to own or repair a european car especially, let alone any car these days, you need to take a trip to the store and get yourself some torx sockets. Unplugging the side curtain bags will only keep them from deploying. I’m guessing you are trying to avoid the 200 MPH beater coming at you from the steering wheel. By unplugging the seat sensor it simply doesn’t know you are sitting in the seat, hence will not deploy in a collision. If you decide to unplug it, keep your head low and as far back as you can. If you trip off the bags it won’t be fun.

Torx sockets? i dont even have Alan sockets just the alan wrenches as far as air bag going off i was just gonna disconnect the battery before going in but anyway is there a way i can get to this plug with out removing the seat its winter snow on the ground and cold dont rely wanna be outside guttin the car i would rather prefer a fuse or just reach under the seat and snip the airbag wires if i didnt despise airbags so much i wouldnt even be considering it!

if you do this your insurance company might drop you, or your or the other drivers policy might not cover injury if you are in a wreck. And if you have inspections in your state they will fail you.

If you don’t want to buy tools, then don’t wonder why you can’t get something apart. Especially don’t buy a German car that takes the tools you don’t want to buy. You want something done and yet want to stay inside. Well, buy a garage or deal with it til spring. If you don’t like snow, move to the south. You go out of your way to create new threads for the most frivolous things like where a tire is. Look in your damn owners manual. You’ve been spoon fed information without having to get out of your chair and yet still have a complaint because it isn’t a 2 second easy job. Well that just sucks, maybe take up knitting or something thats easier and you don’t have to leave the couch for.

Everyone has been warning you not to do it, you have been told the ramifications, yet have been told ho to do it if you choose to ignore all advice given and the only thing you can bring yourself to say is to complain that it isn’t easier, complain about the weather, complain you might have to cough up a couple bucks and actually buy tools to work on a car. Do you think one of us is going to drop everything and fly to your house and fix it for you just to brighten your day? This is what it takes to repair cars. If you don’t want to do it, then don’t.

The insurance company wouldnt even know the airbags are disabled they wouldnt even care cuz the VIN says the car has then dont matter if they work

As I mentioned in your last post perhaps a service manual would be of more help than the owners manual.

Personally, I don’t agree with disabling a safety system but it’s your vehicle and you can do with it as you see fit. If it were me I would just pull the SRS fuse, that should do the trick and be easy enough.
