      hey ericthecarguy forum,

I have a question regarding the cooling system in my volvo v40 1998.
A few weeks ago the lower coolant hose blew of the rad, the hose clamp was rusted and broke.
I replaced the hose clamp and filled the system back up, did the bleeding procedure as discribed in the 2002 Cavalier Water Pump Replacement (Part 2) video.

The problem i am having now is that the enige is running very cool(25% on the gauge) when on the highway.
When i let the car idle it reaches normal temp after a few min.
I have bled the system 3 times now, the fan only kicks in for a few secondes though.

I am wondering if the thermostat is stuck open or am i just unable to bleed the system properly?
      any help is much appreciated

      thanks

        Hi!

You are probably right in your own guess. It is likely the thermostat that somehow got stuck open. Does the engine take longer to warm up than it did before. In that case it is a good hint that the thermostat is the problem.

          hi tobbsi,

i have replaced the thermostat and everything is back to normal now 🙂
And it was only a 15 dollar part!

            Hi again!

I’m glad to hear you solved it. Some models of the V40 have a problem where the relays to the lowbeam headlights can burn out. They are located in the CEM (Central Electronics Module) behind the dash and can be replaced with a little bit of soldering if you ever run into that problem. Just a tip for the future!
