I have 2001 Volvo S80 T6. When I drive it on freeway, after some time it shows massage “performance reduced” and the car slows down to stop. I took it to mechanic so he can check what codes it show, and he said all of the code are about throttle body. I called Volvo mechanic and he said that it needs flow check to make sure it is bad. I have another throttle body for this car but the the problem is if I replace it, I need to take it to mechanic to program it. I want to make sure that I’m replacing right part. Did anyone had this problem? Should I pay for flow test, or should I just replace throttle body?

can you post the actual code?

My dad took the car to mechanic because I didn’t have time. I’m going to find out if he wrote down the codes and then post them.

ECM-9150, ECM-9160, ECM-904C, ECM-914D, ECM-903F, ECM-261A, ECM-271A, ECM-510F. If you need explanation to this codes let me know I will find them and post them. When I drive at high speed after certain time I get message “performance reduced” gas pedal stopes working, but when I turn off the engine and wait couple minutes and start the car up again and everything goes away. Sometimes after that I get this two messages “Engine system service urgent” and “Engine system service required”.

The urgent light is due to the limp home mode kicking in, which will temporarily be reset assuming it can communicate ok with the TPS and/or MAF at the next start-up if you shut it off (as the explanation of your symptoms).

              ECM-271A = Fuel adaptation, Bank 2.
              ECM-261A = Long-term fuel trim, bank 1, upper limit
ECM-903F = Throttle position (TP) – signal missing (can be generated due to another code triggering limp mode)
              ECM-914D = ??
ECM-904C = MIL requested by throttle unit. Faulty signal
ECM-9160 = Throttle unit, internal fault
ECM-9150 = Throttle unit, potentiometer 1. Faulty signal
              ECM-510F = Faulty Speed Signal.

That last one is the only one to not add up. You don’t have the ABS light on do you?

To me, I’d start at the basics. Check wiring, by that I mean check that all pins are clean, unbent. Clean the MAF sensor(MAF cleaner specifically), the throttle-body (again, one that’s specifically for it named on the can), and the PCV (throttle-body cleaner works fine). Then check for vacuum leaks since you should have some carb cleaner handy and went through all this trouble anyhow.

Bunch of recalls for this from the bit of reading, further warranty work, and doubtful with all those codes a bit of cleaning will solve it, but worth a shot. Worst case, you clean up parts for the core charge on new ones..

I do get ABS light come on sometimes. I will try cleaning all of that and let you know what happens. Do you know , when new throttle body is programed, does it need some software from Volvo or is it just hooking up computer and doing something there? Thank you for your help.

Have to wait for someone with experience with volvos, I know there’s no TB programming per say, but if it’s a newer part(s) that works slightly different, the computer (PCM/ECU) gets an update that would be relevant.

Looks to be ECM for the majority of this issue. But if the ABS came on intermittently before this, you’ll probably have at least 1 or 2 other things to fix as well down the line shortly.

                      What is “TPS”?

Didn’t you get a copy of the memo?

                        TPS reports

                        But seriously, Throttle Position Sensor

I’m not a Volvo expert so I can’t say if you need to program the throttle body but if it’s a drive by wire system then this would make sense. Some of the other codes you have listed might also be the result of a faulty throttle body. You may just have to bite the bullet on this one.

I apologize for not writing sooner. I have same volvo for parts, so I took the throttle body from that car and installed it in to my Volvo. The problem disappeared, and I didn’t have to program that throttle body. My old throttle body is very dirty inside. If I cleaned it, that might have solved the problem. I kept my old throttle body because I think it is still good.
