      2000 Volkswagen Beetle 2.0
Here’s the story, the vehicle was in an accident radiator was replaced. . Filled the reservoir with temporary green coolant and left to sit for the winter when I went to start it in the early spring I came to find out that the coolant was now a slushy so I disconnected the upper and lower coolant hoses and left to sit for a month or to until the temp for warmer. I had just replaced the fan control module as dealer technician had recommended, and filled with fresh VW coolant let it run squeezed the upper and lower rad hoses in attempt to evacuate the air from the system. After it ran for several mins I concluded that the thermostat must have seized over the winter, I replaced it, and the problem still occurred. I called the dealer he suggest that the plastic impeller was broken on the water pump as this is common. So I pulled the pump and the impeller was find to my disbelief. I have no clue what else to look for I don’t believe anything could have plugged the system, or maybe something did. The lower rad hose is cold and the upper is hot, there is also a almost “access” port on the upper rad hose right next to the engine it just has a clip holding it in and is just a plug in, well anyway everytime that I pull it to see if there is fluid there isn’t until I wait a second and then it starts flowing in, wether the engine is running or not. If anyone has experienced the same problem please reply to this post. Thanks Ethan.

Many moons ago, I had a similar problem with a classic mustang. I left the hoses off for a season with a new radiator installed. Turned out that a field mouse crawled into he lower end of the radiator looking for a tasty treat, then expired, in the radiator.
With both hoses off, can you drain the radiator and blow air thru it easily?

Kinda tells me there’s no flow through the rad. Sometimes, new rads have plastic plugs pressed into their hose openings to keep crap out of them during shipping and storage. It might be possible that the plugs were never removed.
