There is so much debate about what oil filters should be used and the failure rate of certain brands. One brand comes to mind, starts with
“F”. I think it would be interesting to hear your take on oil filters and our preferences regarding them. just a thought.

I concur. I actually like the filters that start with ‘F’ because of that stupid little black stuff they put on the end. Maybe it’s psychological, but it just seems easier to get off when the time comes. I would trust Eric’s review over anyone else on the net so would love to see him weigh in on this.

Napa Gold, or Wix are great. Probably the same really. Orange filters with the black end I have used, but have heard horror stories from people, and some of those people had done many more engines than I ever will, so what can I say, other than for a few bucks more, skip the orange if its a car you want to save. I would say for some old piece of crap accord or some other beater throw away car, it would make zero difference.

This comes up from time to time. For a video like this I’d want to do some real world testing and that might take a while. If nothing else I’d want to cut them open to have a look. To be honest that’s been done. Should the opportunity come up I’d be happy to look into it but I’ll table this one for now.

            Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks Eric – I concur, to do this properly would require quite a bit of time, and some cost to purchase all the filters, etc. I did some searches and found these links where some home mechanic actually did what would consider some pretty good tests. Folks might want to check these links out. Granted, there is some subjective data but, and he admits that, but none-the-less, he disassembled all the popular filters, provided pics, pricing, filtration ability, etc. Check them out if you haven’t seen them:

I to would be interested in a video like this, but I am sure some expence would be required and some of the “fram death can” verses other oil filters has also been dome and kinda beaten to death in some respects.
