2003 Chevy Impala 3.4 V6
67K milesI am coming to this forum before I make a decision on this, I am trying to figure out if my motor mounts are bad. Tonight I was driving and came to a stop and car had this loud vibration noise. I got out and had my girlfriend hold it in drive while I messed about with a stethoscope. I found that the pcv valve was rattling very loudly when given light throttle and while the engine was being held in gear. Bought a new valve and wallow engine is silent again… at least I thought. While the car is in neutral and idling there is this vibration noise that is mainly heard near the firewall side of the engine. I put a stethoscope on it and I can hear the vibration but it sounds nothing like bad rockers or lifters( I don’t think). The vibration is on and off, it will vibrate and make noise for 1 second then it will stop and then 5 seconds later it will do it again ( Yes I did recheck the pcv and it was fine). This noise gets worse when you hold it in drive but did not make it any easier to pinpoint, everywhere I listen it sounds resonant and not really a source. The noise also goes away with higher rpm. I took a video of the noise in neutral and in gear. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRPLKqY6nPA) It can be kinda hard to hear in neutral but when I put it in gear it is much more audible, still make sure you listen closely and turn up your volume! I am thinking it is a motor mount or transmission mount just because I can’t think of anything else mechanically that would cause something like this. Thank you!
