hey guys,,,need your help here…i have a 2001 accord with a 4 cylinder 2.3 automatic…my idle is very low 250-300 rpm…whats weird is if im doing say 50 mph @ 2000 rpm and let my foot off the gas rpm’s will drop it idle which is very low…because of this when i come to a stop it will automatically idle at 250-300… it dont matter if im doing a 100 mph, when i let off the pedal,,it goes to 250 rpm’s…i have no CEL, and it runs great, no slipping, nothing…can it be the iacv?…when in drive at a idle i can stab the throttle and it will correct itself most of the time…help

Is the car cold when it does this?

Does the car idle down or want to stall when you turn everything on inside the car ( A/C too)?

it dont matter if hot or cold,,,seems as if the a/c is on,,,it runs better……its weird..no roaming or haunting idle….just almost stalls everytime i come to a stop…would the CEL come on if the IACV was bad?…this happens is say 90% of the time when coming to a stop..when it does idle good=700-750 rpm,,it will idle all day but when i take off the very next light it returns…earlier i was doing 4K rpm’s annd let my foot off the peadal and instead of a gradual drop in speed and rpm=it just goes to 250 rpm’s in drive at 85mph….basically i can crank it up to 100mph and let my foot off the pedal and engine will die in drive….

You say you have a check engine light? Get yourself a scanner or go to autozone and find out what that code is.

Have you played with the adjusting screw ? Don’t, those cars are computer controlled.

When you turn the A/C on it lets the computer know to bump the idle up slightly so you don’t stall the engine at idle.

It’s quite common for V6 Honda engines of that vintage to have issues with the IAC valve, it’s almost a given really. I’m not a fan of cleaning them, I just replace them. The symptoms you describe fall in line with a problem with the IAC, it will sometimes set a check engine light but not often. You can try tapping on the valve with a screwdriver handle or someting while the engine is running to see if the idle changes, if it does then you most likely have a problem with the valve and I recommend you replace it if that is the case.

well,,,i fixed it…it was a extremely dirty throttle body..at first i unplugged the iacv and it did roam up and down…set off code…reset with my scanner..cleaned it with TB cleaner=never seen one so dirty….car has almost 600k…miles not km…thanks for all the support….

600k yeah… if you would have said that I’m sure everyone would have been up in arms over the throttle body lol. TB is a regular maintenance item. I’d still +1 Eric’s suggestion though. If the TB is that bad then the IAC is bound to be gunked up too. It uses the same air supply right? Might want to put that on le’ menu for checking.
