Just a quick one. Need to replace the gaskets on a ford 360′ 1971 4×4, got the valve covers straightened out everything clean, just noticed on the block there is a fine ridge of metal where the gasket sits can I file that down? Looks like a factory defect. Thanks.

Looks like casting flash that didn’t get machined off. If you do wish to file it use a hand file and get a magnet sitting where the filings where fall. Make sure you get it all cleaned up. A small dab of silicone right where the step is would be a good idea too, and do not overtorque the bolts going back in or the gasket will squish out. The old Fords should’ve had more bolts than they did to spread the torque around. I like to run a thin layer of silicone around the whole perimeter when I do them to keep them from leaking down later. Then put the valve cover on and bolts in, but just tighten fingertight. Let it sit an hour to let the silicone set up then finish the torque. Also be using a rubber gasket, not the old style cork gasket.
