I have a 1971 Toyota Corolla Wagon KE26. I have a long hose that comes from my valve cover that just runs down the side of the engine to nothing. From what I’m understanding this hose is a valve cover breather hose. My question is, should this hose be going anywhere. I see that others use a valve cover breather filter. Can I replace this hose with a valve cover breather filter. What is the recommended application? What are the pros and cons?

I’m guessing the hose is your PCV hose, and it should connect to a nipple somewhere on the intake manifold or the air cleaner housing. It sounds like a previous owner converted the PCV system to function like the older “road draft” crankcase ventilation system.
The thing is, if the hose is still connected to the PCV valve at the valve cover, your crankcase isn’t being vented at all. The PCV valve needs to be connected to a vacuum source in order for it to open.
