Eric has a great vid on valve adjustment. If you have not already, I highly recommend giving it a look. He explains it all very clearly.

A quick answer to your question by a non expert. Yes, you need to retighten the nut around the set screw. If not locked down, vibration will spin the screw and your valves will be out of adjustment.

As to sweet spot. Eric explains (with then engine COLD), just a slight drag. Contact points touching the gauge but not resisting movement. I did mine (Accord) this weekend, since I was in there; and found the contact points a little carbonized. I dipped the feeler into the oil around the cam and found that with a little oil the gauge goes between the contacts better and give a better feel to the gauge.

Good luck and I hope this helps somewhat. It is a very subjective thing. Hard to describe.

After re-reading your post, my answer was not on point. Sorry.

Yes, you should be able to get the nut tight enough with the adjuster. They don’t need to be reefed down upon. Just tight. I would guess you can do that with just the handle of the tool. However, I would take a small wrench and check your first one. If there is not a lot of travel picked up on the first one or two, then you should be good to go.

It only takes a second to double check your work, and will give you peace of mind after you put the valve cover back on.

        Good luck.

You’re doing this for the first time, so check your work after the you have finished tightening. Slip the feeler guage in again and see if the adjustment is off as a result of tightening. Too tight? Not good. Select a feeler gauge the next size up and see if it fits.

You should just be able to lock it down with one turn, if you go back after the fact and try to tighten again you may alter the adjustmen so I don’t advise that. Don’t overtighten the jam nut either you just need to make it snug you don’t need to kill it.
