Thanks for great videos. I used the one on the ACURA V6 to help with my Odyssey 2004 valve adjustment. Reason to do it – valve slap noise (or thats what i thought). Van has 155,000 Kms, no other issues, no error codes, no performance issues – just the loud valve (tappet as I used to call it) noise. HAd the van from new, regular oil changes, timing belt and water pump changed six months ago, plugs changed – well maintained….

Opened her up and there is a very distinct difference in color between the front bank (normal as the Acura video colors) and the rear bank – almost orange colored. Both banks look well oiled, nothing smells burned or otherwise out of the norm.
The valves all seemed close to in spec (they are a pain to measure). Can’t see anything else to comment on.
Any reason for this very marked color difference ? SHould I reassemble and move on ? No valve adjustments needed, so what would make a similar noise ?
Would appreciate any feedback. I have taken photos and could post if that would help.

are the exhaust valves slightly darker than the inlet valves ? i would just say that exhaust bank would be hotter than the inlet bank probably nothing to worrie about ? as for the noise ? just double check the valve clearances again ? making sure the valve you are testing is fully closed ?

The V6 has inlet and exhaust on each bank, the back 3 cylinders are the ones that are orange like in colour. The front three cylinders are the “normal” color – so not exhaust to inlet related.

          Thanks for the suggestion though.

I would say is just from the heat, since they are the exhaust valves.

Guys, the rear bank and front bank on a V6 Odyssey each has inlet and exhaust valves.
The back bank as the photos show has this orange coloration.
I put her back together yesterday and after all the hours, the ticking/valve noise is still there. She runs fine, no error codes after reassembly (nor were there before). So I am not sure what the noise is – an oil change at the dealers and ask them to let me know there thoughts is my approach.
Also don’t know what the discoloration is but given she ran well for so many KM’s I plan to just keep on going.

Still interested if anyone has seen this color difference before on any Honda V6 engine.

The discoloration is normal. It’s due to the hot soak the rear bank gets after shut down which is more than the front bank gets. As for the noise it’s not likely to be the result of a valve adjustment issue unless someone misadjusted them before you. In truth the valves hardly move during the life of the engine and if they do it’s only a small amount. Make sure you’re using the correct viscosity oil, if not this could cause your noise.
