We are trying to adjust the valves on a 94 honda accord ex but on one of the valves, no matrer how loose we make the bolt, the tool will not fit at the required 0.010. What could the problem be? It is the only one that there is an issue with and ll the valves are new. Please help!

I can’t envision a situation where that would happen, unless the cam follower isn’t properly situated on the cam lobe for that valve. Perhaps someone who has more experience than I will chime in with another idea though.

Do you mean that even when you loosen the lock nut, the adjustment screw will not turn? Quite common. You may have to remove the cam follower and put it in a vise and use a hammer or some heat.

I cam turn the adjustment screw but no matter how high up I get it, there isn’t enough clearance. Should I also loosen the lock nut more and see if that helps?

it sounds to me like you dont have the cam lobe in the rite possition and it pressing on it…if your not turning the motor over to do each of them one cylender at a time that will happen

Maybe I’m off slightly on lining up. Will go out and try again latet

Did you remember to turn the cam to the flat spot for that valve?

The screw thread pitch is like 35 thou per turn, so it usually takes much much less than a fraction of a turn to get the gap right, if you have the cam turned to the flat spot.

It is on the flat spot. Its open in the back. I have even taken the lock nut completely off and put the adjustment screw all the way up but the valve continues to touch the screw 🙁

i mean if your timing is rite (as in the cam is in the correct place tdc for cylender etc…) then it sounds like ur valve is too long…i believe that would be the only way to make that happen…makem sure absolutely no piece of the cam is touching…post pic and i can get more of an idea of fixing it..or even you have the entake and exhaust valve backwards, dont know if its possable…just thought

Well, that tells us the valve head isn’t there anymore. Compare the height of the valve tip. It should be the same height as all the other valves, within 20 thou maybe. If the valve tip keeps on coming up no matter how much you back off the screw, then something is very wrong with the valve, like the head broke off or the shaft broke. Pretty rare but can happen.

But if this engine was running okay before, then its unlikely that the valve is broken. Optical illusion?

The car has not been started since the new valves were put in. I will post a pic later. I will check that also but seems almost impossible as it hasn’t been run. Just did the timing yesterday and last thing needed to start her up was the valve adjustment. I appreciate all the helpful answers. At work now but will post pics when I get out
So, I’m thinking maybe the valve isn’t seated right or maybe a retainer isn’t placed right??

Oh, if the valves are new, then maybe you got the wrong kind of valve in there. Quite often the exhaust valves are a tad taller than the intake valves. It’s usually not possible to goof up on the c-clip. So it’s probably a too-tall valve. Oops.

Sounds like there’s an issue with the new valves, or the rocker is not positioned correctly. I would not try and start the engine until you resolve this issue. If you got aftermarket valves, I would recommend you switch to OE. They really aren’t that expensive. Also, make sure you lap them in when you install them.

                              Keep us posted.

Sounds like the valves are wrong spec. Maybe one valve was in the wrong box, I have seen that before.
