Hi. I am changing my head gasket on my d17a2 engine and I noticed that some of the valves are sticking out (as shown in the picture). Is this normal or these needs to be replaced? Thank you in advance.

Did you happen to look to see if the cam(s) position matches the position of the valves?

i want to see more, lol. it looks like the head is upside down on a bench(?) and all of the valves should be closed. in which case i doubt if changing the valves would help. the valve guides normally have to be replaces as well.

@ TDC , number 1 cylinders valves should be all closed.
But depending where the other 3 cylinder cam lobes are positioned will determine if the other valve are open or closed.

I’m going to assume the cam is still installed in the head. Some valves will be open when #1 is at TDC, but the picture still doesn’t look right to me. #1 is on the left side of the photo, right?

In the third combustion chamber, only one of the valves is open. Is this one of those Honda engines that has a 4 valve head, but only actuates 3 valves under certain conditions?

Also, the valve heads in the fourth combustion chamber show signs of a coolant leak into that cylinder, but the combustion chamber itself is mighty grungy. Do you also have an oil leak into that cylinder? The second combustion chamber also shows signs of a coolant leak, but nowhere near as pronounced as #4.
