If you have already covered this, I apologize. But when I went through automotive training, my instructor used to rave about the usefulness of the vacuum gauge to do almost everything – timing, engine health etc.. Now that was 30 years ago and things have definately changed. But if it can still be useful it may be a good topic to cover. Thanks for all the videos. Brian

I believe a vacuum gauge still has it’s place today. Problem is finding someone who knows how to diagnose from one.

At some point I plan to play with the Fairmont carburetor a little bit. At that time, I plan to hook the vacuum gauge up and talk a bit about it. I did make this video though.

It is a great tool but as pointed out, it’s kinda a lost art and with the digital diagnostics of todays vehicles, it’s somewhat less relevant. If you know how to interpret MAP sensor readings, you really don’t need a vacuum gauge.

          Great suggestion.

If the Fairmont still uses the carter YF-1 you’ll find inside a dancing needle valve in the power jet. Get that set right and great mileage. Not that it matters but just interesting.

I don’t think it uses an MC dwell solenoid. From what I can see, it’s just a straight up carburetor. I do hope to do a rebuild video with it as well as a ‘how a carburetor works’ and possibly ‘setting a carburetor choke’ videos. I have some other ones that have already been shot that I need to work through first however.

              Thanks for your input.
