      1984 mercedes 300d turbo,5 cylinder,3 liter.

the car has a vacum pump. the rear door locks open very slow. not normal. passenger side ok. how do i find this problem. i have a vacum tester with gauge.should i have another
gauge so i dont have to keep turning on/off the engine? most mechanics dont want to tackle this type of problem. where do i start? i traced the lines as the diagrams are not well documented.

First thing that comes to mind is to check for vacuum leaks using a smoke machine if you have access to one, or have a shop so that for you.

I would think it’s a similar setup used in other German cars so this might help:

Great video John. I just learned something.:cheer:
looks like some tracing is in order.

When I heard of your problem I thought of the above video by Will Robinson. He’s a kind hearted and experienced tech who has put together several good videos worth subscribing.

I too would probably use smoke but an easier method might also be to use soap and water and actually run compressed air (dialed back of corse) into the system to see if I could find leaks that way. You might also try pinching off different sections to see if the problem still exists, if you pinch off a certain section and the problem goes away the source of the leak may be in that section. I’d be looking hard at the actuators as they do the most work and as a result are subject to the most wear.

greetings. i ordered a vacum gauge and is very good combo with the vacum tester.i fd vacum from the engine side, got my hands dirty going under the floor mats and driver door inside. i found a bad valve and a leaky 2 way rubber connector on the unlock side.
that part is ok. some of the heater switches are not working. the ac system is a vacum assist type. bad thing is that the ac is mostly in the dash on the right side.still need some documentation before proceeding.

i did look at the vw video on vacum.

Sounds like you’re part way there. I would say employ the same methods for the HVAC but as you pointed out access may be an issue. Keep your ears on, sometimes you can actually ‘hear’ a leak in a system like that.
