Using too much oil

Have 93 Jeep GC with the inline 6. Has 185,000 miles and recently passed CA smog with great results. But it is using about a quart of oil every 1000 to 1200 miles. No leaks and been using synthetic mobil one oil.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Suggest you do a compression test to see the state of health of the engine.

How old is yout PCV valve? You can check it by pulling it out had shaking itto see if teh ball is still moving.

It doesn’t have a normal pvc valve. It just has a fitting on top of the valve cover (straight 6) that goes over to the air cleaner. What is strange is I would think a smog check would show it was burning oil but it shows all levels are great. I just figure the rings are worn with as many miles as it has. Still has plenty of power.

Be sure the tubing for the crankcase ventilation system isn’t plugged. Remove all of it and blow through it to make sure it’s not restricted as well as the fittings it connects to. Return to conventional oil 10w30 or 10w40. If that Jeep was under warranty and lower mileage Chrysler would tell you that a quart in 1000 miles is normal.

I understand but wouldn’t that fail smog? I think the only reason for that fitting on the valve cover with a tube going to the air cleaner is to catch any blow by from the valves and stems. I do not know of any other tube that is going to the crankcase other than the tube for the dip stick. I can look at the manual and see more but am pretty sure. This is a simple in-line 6.

You must have a PCV valve somewhere, probably on the valve cover. Positive Crankcase Ventilation was the first anti pollution system on automotive engines, and every engine built since the early 60s is equipped with a PCV valve.

As for your oil consumption, make sure you are using the correct viscosity/weight. You can do a compression check, and a leakdown test can also be helpful. You also should check for external oil leaks. They might not be obvious at first glance, say, like a leak past the rear crankshaft seal. You’ll have to get under the vehicle and use a bright flashlight.

Does not sound too excessive to me. I owned a Saturn and it used more and ran well passing emissions. The oil is either leaking or being burned. If not leaking, look to:
                    1. Valve stem seals. (Smoke on start up and perhaps corners).
                    2. PCV valve.
                    3. Rings. (do a leak down test and compression test).

If memory serves me, it’s been a while since i worked on one there should be a small plastic tube that runs from the top rear of the valve cover to a fitting on the intake manifold. Oil is a hydrocarbon when it’s burned and if the numbers coming out the tail pipe are under the limit set by the government and there is no visible smoke it will pass smog. The catalytic converter must be working well.

OK I think I know the tubes you are referring to. Not looking at the manual but they are small hard plastic tubes and should be easy to blow our with air and see if they are gummed up. Makes sense and am sure they have never been checked. Thanks
