I was wondering if you could use 2 qts of auto trans fluid along with 4 qts of 5w-30 on my next oil change. I saw a video on youtube with a guy that did this to get rid of a lifter knock/tick/tap in a 5.3L Vortec. It was a slight tick it had at first, but in the end it worked. Now my truck is an 03′ Avalanche with the same engine but the tap is about 15x more louder. It’s been like that for 8 years now and doesn’t seem to be a problem but it’s rather annoying. I was wondering if this would work, hurt the engine, or any other ideas of fixing this. I’m not a mechanic by all means but I do work on small engines and I don’t have any serious big power/air tool just a battery and corded drill. I do know my way around engines though, I just don’t work on them. Any help? Ideas? Insight?

My god you had me laughing when I read, “Starting engine next morning is quite an adventure, as for about 10 minutes you have military grade smoke curtain coming out of tail pipe. Fun. Sorta”. I was just imagining that in my front yard. I switched to 10w-40 for a few weeks but the truck had a rough idle and wouldn’t start. But that was from it being really cold. Would switching back to that oil be good for the summer? It didn’t really burn much oil then. The truck has about 155,000 miles on her.

I run 10W-40 in my little 4-banger during the summer. However 10W-40 is rapidly disappearing from the store shelves.

Well I can get it for free from the dairy that I work at, the have a big tank full of it for the 60+ International 4900’s. They shouldn’t notice.

Should you listen to Bob The Oil Guy, he recommends oils that have the least difference between them. Hence, 10W30 is more advised than 10W40.
How exactly COLD was it? If you look at any oil charts, they are all relevant on ambient temperature. Basically, in continental and coastal(well, normally)USA, you can easily use 10W30 on any vehicle, as it does not get real cold. States like Dacotas or Alaska are of course different. I have been running older cars here in Pac NW ever since we moved here, on 10W30, and never had any starting issues. Had dam struts freeze, was THAT cold, but never engine no start.

The oil also has more ZDDP, which is better for the lifters. 10W-40 is my alternative oil, however I haven’t observed the same thing you have. Must be local to you.

I buy oil at Walmart. My car calls for synthetic but last summer the closest I could get was a blend. So, what I should have said is that synthetic in 10W-40 at the Walmart price is disappearing.

BTW, crude has dropped in price by 50%. Gas is cheaper. When is engine oil going down in price?

And ya, true weird huh? I guess the engine oil manufacturers just think “more profit”. They won’t lower their prices, they are going to milk it.
