      1996 Chevrolet K1500 5.7L 4×4 — 257,000

Driving on the highway, no clunk, just an immediate out of nowhere failure to accelerate properly. When trying to accelerate, the truck would shake quite a bit. Anything above 15mph I start getting noticeable shaking throughout the truck when accelerating. Oddly, it’s the worst at a stoplight with foot on brake but truck in drive.

      – Does not happen in park or neutral. ONLY in reverse or drive.

Even if the vehicle is not moving while in reverse or drive there’s a very bad shake. However if I simply idle while truck is in park I don’t have any issues.

When driving tranny seems to shift through gears fine.

Something is clicking underneath the vehicle from where the tranny and motor meet down to the rear driveshaft (Not in the rear diff). Haven’t been able to pinpoint the sound. Rear driveshaft has no play from me trying to push on it when the truck is off. I was hearing this for a couple days now before the acceleration issue came up today.

I don’t know if these two problems are related, but a video below shows what I’m hearing.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. My thoughts are, bad torque converter?

I am thinking you might have a failing torque converter or cracked / broken flex plate

That’s what I was thinking..never did a job like this before. Is it possible to service these two items while the motor and tranny are still in the truck? Maybe by loosening some mounts?

You’ll probably be able to leave the engine in, but have to pull the transmission to inspect the flex plate. The torque specs are usually high enough that you’ll want to use an impact wrench if you have to replace the flex plate.
But you might also be able to rent an inspection camera, or use a flashlight and mirror to check things out by pulling the starter and looking through its mounting hole.
