Hi. New to this forum so if I am asking my question in the wrong spot sorry about that, let me know I will move it. I have used Eric’s video’s for a couple years and he has saved me $1,000 of dollars.

Question: I had my 2005 Nissan Frontier in for tires and was told the upper arm controls need to be replaced. The guy quoted me a crazy amount $1300. Said the upper control arms were $560 a piece? The dealer sells them for $88 a piece, so I am very suspected that he is trying to take me for a ride. So I am thinking maybe they don’t even need to get replaced. I have watched several video’s on control arms and bushings, but still have one question about those. Everything checks out ok when doing the typical tests that I have seen online. But one thing I noticed is on the upper control arms bushings is when I turn the wheels all the way back and forth the bushings move about an 1/2 inch back and forth. Are the bushing suppose to have a little play in them, or are they suppose to not move at all? Thanks again and this site is sweet! If it helps I could post a video of the bushings moving?

I did a quick check on-line, a several parts outlets are showing aftermarket stock upper control arms, with bushings and ball joints, for your vehicle priced close to, (and a bit lower than), the dealer price you mentioned. When it comes to custom control arms used for lifted suspensions, large diameter tires, long-travel shocks and other off-road mods, the prices are closer to the more expensive price you quoted.

And no, bushings shouldn’t squirm around by 1/2 an inch. A video would be helpful.

Thanks for the reply, I am pretty sure the control arms are stock but will try and find a stock number and look them up. Attached a video of the control arm bushing moving side to side. Thanks again for the info.

I would say go for the swap out yourself. They’re really not that bad to do. Well, they weren’t bad to do on my Ranger. I didn’t have to undo my shocks or much of anything. Pretty much just the upper control arm itself, chalk marked camber bolts so they went back in the same way they came out, and all was gold. My stance and camber was better afterwards, without even taking it to an alignment shop. Only hard part was torquing with the truck on the ground. I did use the jack to lift the lower control arm back up for the spindle to meet the upper control arm. Although, I have good luck getting better prices from Rockauto. You may get them for half what the dealership wants.
