Not too long ago, I got a stark reminder as I was pulling out from the school parking lot. I was getting squealing noise on my passenger side front tire. Paranoid, I pulled off on the side of the highway and research on what’s making the noise. From what I read, the wear indicator on the inner pad has reached the rotor. Seeing as I’m going have to replace the pad, do you suggest I do just the tire or the entire car or it’s something completely different. This is my first time experiencing with this problem and I like some help.

every time u change ur brakes they come in pair for the two front tires, if u noticed the rear brakes are worn also then replace them.

You should replace the pair which would be both front wheels and inspect the rear brakes and replace if needed

Ever since I drove it? no.
Have the other drivers done it (I’m the third driver)? Maybe once or twice

If you need to change the brake pads on one side, there’s a very big chance that the other side will closely follow. So definitely worth doing them at the same time.

As for if the rears need to be done, because the majority of the braking is done by the front brakes, they will wear much faster. Good to check them also, but you can get away with not doing them as often.

Not as much of an issue with pads, but when I put steel braided brake hoses on my car, they advised never to change just one side, as the uneven brake pressure could cause BIG problems. With something like that you have to do all 4. But brake pads won’t have those same issues. But still best to change them in pairs (2 fronts/2 rears)

Update: I just went and got them inspected and it was worse than I thought. I was literally driving a ‘screaming metal death trap’. Pads and shoes were done. The drums and rotors couldn’t be machine to install the new pads and shoes. And since this was sudden and I was short on cash, I’ve decided and changed the pads and rotors. The drums and shoes will be done next month. Thanks for your quick response. I appreciated it. 🙂

Next time don’t assume based on something you read that you know what the problem is. As you found out actually taking the time to get a look at the brakes yielded the information you needed. Thanks for keeping us up to date and for using the ETCG forum.

I was planning on changing the brakes regardless if I heard the sound or not because I’ve noticed how soft the pedal was and how difficult it was for me to stop especially on the highway. The noise just made me paranoid and got me fearing for my life. So in the end, I’m not driving a ‘Screaming Metal Deathtrap’ anymore 😀

Before you do your brakes you should always look for leaks in the system. Check the reservoir, master cylinder and all of the brake lines for leaks or worn hoses.
