Hi,

i seem to have some kind of performance issue on my car.
It usually appears in 2nd gear during acceleration. It feels like the car is choking and it is not accelerating smoothly.
This problem only occurs sporadically and i did not manage to reproduce it.
Now I am trying to find out what the problem might be.
I startet by changing my spark plugs, the old ones looked quite good, but I changed them nonetheless.
Next step is changing the fuel filter.
But there are two things I am currently thinking might also be responsible for that:

First: Before I bought the car it stood for about 2-3 years at a honda dealer. Now I’m afraid that the injectors might be clogged due to bein stationary for such a long time. Like I found out this seems to be a known problem with honda injectors?

Second: Every time I turn off my car after driving I can hear a whistling noise for about 2 seconds. It seems to come from the enginge somewhere but I could not locate the source of that noise. Might be a vacuum-leak maybe??

So I have two questions:
1. How can i clean my injectors? And how can i find out if they are clogged?
2. Any tipps on where to look for the source of the whistling noise?

My car: Honda Civic Aerodeck MC2
Enginge: B18C4 DOHC VTEC
Model: 1998
kilometers: 180.000

For clogged fuel injector try any of the fuel cleaning bottle they sell in the auto store. About the leak do you have access to a scan tool that shows STF(short TERM fuel.) If you have a leak, STF will show about 20+(medium leak) . If you have a negative number you looking at issues with your fuel delivery system like fuel pressure regulator…If don’t have access to that yes you can spray throttle body cleaner around the hoses and see if you idle changes. Also a leak will also causes issue with idle. Do you have any issues at idle?

Did you use the correct plugs? Ngk should be used.
try checking for voltage leaks. Have the wires, cap
and rotor been changed? ngk for the wires.OE for the
cap and rotor. If the car did sit.you may want to change
the fuel filter.

Hi and thanks for the quick response.

@ elgiro15
Unfortunately I don’t have access to such a STF scan tool.
For the spraying test I only have Starter-Spray but I think this will do fine, too.
Right now I don’t have any idle problems. Stable RPMs.

@ college man
Yeah, I bought the NGK Plugs which are mentioned in the owners manual.
I changed the plugs first to see if that solves my problem, but nope.
No parts have been changed yet except the plugs. Everything else is still OEM.
Fuel filter will be replaced in a minute, I’m about to go outside.

I’ll watch the video about the ignition leaks and see if thats an issue on my car.
Throttle cleaning is a good idea also. Do I need to buy dedicated throttle cleaner or will break cleaner also do its job?

Somehow I have the feeling that I have an overall performance problem.
Top Speed is not there where it should be also. And at the point the VTEC valve switches it feels like my car decelerates a litte. I can feel the point where it switches but the car gets a little slower. When I reach the point where the multistage intake manifold switches I feel the car going forward like it should…

either throttle body or carb spray for the TB cleaning.
brake clean won’t dissolve the carbon or varnish. you
can check the wires for voltage leaks.do it somewhere
dark.so you can see any arcing. also have a look at the
distributor cap and rotor.

luckily its dark outside right now.
I’ll check for voltage leaks and possible vacuumleaks right now.

see you later and thanks 🙂
this is a great forum!

ok I’m back.

I could not find any obvious voltage or vacuum leaks.
But I was able to locate the whistling noise. Not only that. I also noticed that it makes a plopping noise when turning the key in the on position and a noise that sounds like a pressure release when turning the key back.

Here is a video I made in which you can hear both noises.
I turned the key twice in on position and back in the first video.
The second video is self-explaining.
There is no picture because it was too dark for the camera.

The noise seems to come from this region. I suspect the thing in the center of the circle.

What part is it? What is it for?

If I’m not mistaken. I believe its your fuel
pressure regulator. start the car.pull and plug
the vacuum line.is gas coming out of that port that
the vac line was on? also check that the vacuum line
is tight on there and the line is not cracked. If nothing
found.Take the car for a ride with that vac line off but
capped.see if performance is better. the second part of
the video sounded like your PCV bleeding off after the engine
stopped.normal condition.

damn….yesterday I tried to change my fuel filter but I was afraid to break the screw on top.
It does not move anywhere. Then I decided to spray penetrating oil on it and try again next day.
So….today is next day and it still does not move even a bit. argh!

Maybe I should wait until I can get a new one just in case breaking it.
Is it just a Bolt, or is it a hollow-core bolt like on brake lines?

that top bolt is like a brake line fitting.
its called a banjo fitting.did you pull the
fuel pump fuse and crank the engine to relieve
the fuel pressure?

yes I releaved the fuel pressure.
I’m just afraid of breaking the bolt on a sunday with a pregnant girlfriend at home 😉

that bolt should not be that tight.I understand
you not wanting to break it.

thanks to my unreliable honda dealer who seems to have forgotten my parts enquiry the new banjo fitting will be here on wednesday.
I’ll come back to this topic then and post my experiences with changing the fuel filter.

man. it took me a little longer to come back to this thread because my daughter was born banana:

so. I changed the fuelfilter (the old fitting did not break 😉 ), oil (including filter), spark plugs and I still experience this unsteady acceleration in the lower revs (around 2000 – 3000 RPM)

Do you guys have any more tipps what I could or should check?

I thought I might try cleaning the throttle next. Should I maybe have my lambda sensor checked?

greets

Congratulations on your daughter being born. 🙂 Did you ever
check fuel pressure or do anything with the fuel pressure regulator?
Try this. With the engine running. Pull off the vacuum line the the fuel
pressure reg and cap it. see if the regulator is leaking fuel. If not take
the car for a ride and see if your acceleration improves. If it does replace
the FPR.

is it this rusty part mounted to the injector-rail with the vac line on top, or the not so rusty one right behind it?

EDIT: Oh hell…I just realized that we already figured out where the FPR is located on the first page. Looks like I have a brain leak also 😀
