I am a long time user of Permatex Ultra Grey RTV. I can’t think of a time it failed me. Besides its automotive uses I’ve used it for some other weird stuff. For example I got through installing a new lavatory in the guest bathroom when I noticed it was cracked on the bottom. It has been dropped at some point and the passage for the overflow on the underside of the sink was leaky. Rather than pulling the lavatory after all the plumbing connections were made I smeared on some Ultra Grey. That was years ago and still no leaks.

Now, I frequently read on forums that if you wish to be sure your pan install (or insert any other part here) does not leak you had better use Honda Bond. Well, having never used Honda Bond I’m wondering if something better has come along. Has any person used both? I’m looking for a review.

I only use Hondabond when rebuilding motorcycle or marine engine casings. And Three Bond 1215 on VW engine casings. For regular style ICE engines I use Permatex grey or black.

If I can’t get Hondabond I use Loctite 515 or Permatex Anaerobic Flange Sealant for Marine engines.

Hondabond is kinda overkill for a regular oil pan it is more geared toward 2 stroke engine casings since a 2 stroke engine uses the crankcase as part of the power cycle, the air/fuel mix is pumped into the crankcase under pressure before being ported into the cylinder.

So, is Hondabond more of an adhesive? Does it make things hard to disassemble?

Yes, Hondabond is a bit more adhesive than standard RTV.

They designed it for motorcycle engine case halfs. You want a stronger adhesive that is still flexible and able to deal with temperature variations.

Okay, I think I will stick to the product I know. Thanks for explaining the use of Hondabond. If a suitable application occurs I will know what to use.

I’ve used all different RTVs and I have got to say Toyota Black is the best sealant to use. You can use it to reseal nearly anything and its meant for engine oil and coolant the only thing you can’t use is on is gearboxes and dkfferencials.
