I think you need to ask yourself a few questions about the demands your driving places on oil. First consult your owners manual. You will find that all auto manufacturers recommend one oil change interval for “normal” conditions and another for “severe” conditions. You would do best to follow these recommendations and I think you will find that the most experienced and knowledgeable fellows here on this forum will give you the same advice.
On the other hand, there are a lot of fearful fellows who think you need to exceed the manufacturer’s recommendations – use synthetic oil or change every 3,000 miles.
I’m one of these guys so I use synthetic oil and the “severe” schedule. I change my oil and filter myself and I’m retired, so I don’t mind doing it, and it’s cheap for me. I’m used to older cars and trucks with carburetors and distributors with contact points as well as Alfa Romeos with mechanical F.I. and solid lifters that had to be adjusted every 16K miles, so if I just changed my oil in my 2004 Acura every 10K miles, (or even 5K miles like the “severe” schedule recommends) I would break out in hives just worrying that I wasn’t doing squat to maintain my car!
I think there are a lot of us nowadays who ought to be following the “severe” schedule because short trips put additional strain on your oil. If you commute to work (or Starbucks) every day and put 15 or 20 minutes on your car, you get poor mpg, and put stress on your oil. Follow the “severe” schedule if only for your peace of mind.
If you sometimes exceed the mileage interval and find yourself changing oil late, use a synthetic like Mobil 1 (I’m a Castrol Synthetic person, but that’s because I knew somebody at Castrol corporate who knew the score and told me it was as good as Mobil 1). Plenty of experienced folks like Royal Purple, so get down and funky with that if you like.May 16, 2012 at 11:00 am #456496This is the best website to use for those types of questions –

I’ve always used the cheapest I could find. Have 3 vehicles and all have over 260,000 miles. My wife’s Neon has 270,000+ and it’s an every day driver of 150 miles + daily. Key is regular oil changes, I do it every 5000 miles. Yes, and I replace the oil filter with the cheapest I can find, Fram, AC Delco. Purolator (I don’t think I’ve paid over $2.00 for a filter). (Currently my oil was purchased at $0.99/qt for the Citgo, Shell, and Valvoline and $1.49/qt for the Pennzoil, Quaker State and Castro)l. Also have some synthetic I got for about $2.00/qt Probably have about 15 12 qt cases left of the regular and a couple cases of synthetic. Purchased about 25 cases a couple years ago when cheaper and with rebates.
May 16, 2012 at 11:00 am #456498I do change my oil every 3000 miles and I use full synthetic always. I guess the main thing I was wondering is if I should spend extra on royal purple or just stick with less expensive full synthetic oils.
May 17, 2012 at 11:00 am #456500Well after 3000 miles my oil is really dark. The owner before myself didn’t really take car of the car to well and when I changed my oil the same day I purchased it the oil was black and the filter looked really old…
May 17, 2012 at 11:00 am #456499Changing your synthetic oil every 3,000 miles is completely unnecessary, and a waste of money. I have sent several samples of Mobil 1 and Pennzoil Platinum from my 2003 Accord to Blackstone labs for oil analysis. In my engine, both of these oils were still providing proper protection at 7,000 miles of use.
May 28, 2012 at 11:00 am #456501a little off the discussion but if the car was never kept up with i wouldnt change the oil to synthetic, i would just make sure all the fluids are changed when they need to be honestly i just use the cheapest oil i can get unless its a performance type vehicle then i use the most expensive fluids i can get
May 28, 2012 at 11:00 am #456502I have been running Amsoil synthetic oil for over ten years and never had an issue with it, and I have tried several different types. I have had it tested after 20,000 miles and it was still suitable for continued service. If your oil keeps turning black, run a flush treatment to remove deposits and go back with your same brand of oil in the recommended grade. If you use a full synthetic, it does not wear out or generate deposits at the same rate as dino oil allowing longer drain intervals.
May 28, 2012 at 11:00 am #456503i heard that switching to synthetic oil with a vehicle that wasnt kept up with would hurt the gaskets in the vehicle not sure how true this is but i wouldnt want to damage the gaskets and cause another problem converting
