Anyone have any experience with turbo’s?

I know how they work but i’m have a big lack of power issue when my 04 Volvo S40 is cold. It feels like the turbo isn’t engaging/spinning when it’s cold but seems to work normal when warmed up. I know their is a boost pressure solenoid and a waste gate, but i’m not sure which to check first. I might pull he turbo and see if the mechanical linkage is working on the waste gate.

Turbos work pretty much the same but different manufacturers control them differently. For that reason I’d recommend getting your hands on a factory service manual to see how to test the one you have. In addition, don’t rule out other performance issues like an engine that’s out of time or a restricted exhaust. Don’t assume because you’re down on power that it’s a turbo issue. There could be other things happening. Take your time and do a proper diagnosis not based on assumptions for the best outcome.

If the exhaust pressure is down, then you will also most likely suffer bad turbo performance as it is the exhaust gasses that is effectively driving the turbo etc.
