I’ve posted a set of pictures of the car under “What Are You Working On.” I purchased the car knowing it had issues. It finally became clear I needed to replace (or rebuild) the engine. I choose to replace the engine with a rebuilt one. It’s now in. Most of the problems are gone now with that “new” engine. The car has the power and torque that it should have. It’s “almost” right. But it still seems to not be as smooth as it should be or as other 94 Mustangs that run properly are. No vacuum leaks, electrical is is really good shape. The replacement engine did not come with new throttle body (or new injectors). It still wants to throw an O2 sensor code so that will be tackled next. I’ve only driven it 7-10 miles since the install of the rebuilt engine. I would love input on designing a game plan to see if performance can be improved. I will not be kicking it hard until the engine breaks in more. I wanted a car that was an ongoing project, and I think I got that. I did have a cheap cold air intake on the old engine and now I’m back to stock. So, if you have ideas, I’m all ears! 🙂

No problem. I think you will have a blast with your car once its sorted. I found this after submitting the post above.

As pointed out faulty O2 sensors will effect performance. If you have ANY CEL’s it will effect performance. Repair the CEL and then recheck the performance.

As for increasing performance, don’t fall into the trap of bolting on ‘go fast’ parts thinking they’ll make a difference. They won’t. Cold air intakes are a prime example. They do nothing to improve power, they just make the engine louder and the engine bay a little nicer to look at, that’s all.

If you want to improve performance you need to start from the ground up. A different cam would be a good start. Then you’d need to tune the computer to run it. In fact, there are several things you can do, none of it is bolt on however. I’d suggest you get some books on performance to help educate yourself on how to make a vehicle perform better. I believe your time and money would be better spent on that at this stage rather than the direction you’ve mentioned up to this point.

Good luck and keep us posted.

SHE’S BACK! I just the 94 out for a run and the power is there! If you have followed this thread, you will know that I had replaced the engine (the old one was very sick) by a re-manufactured engine (from Jasper). It had a lot more power but you could just feel it was still not totally right. Replaced the o2s and did not gain anything. Cat checked ok. Kept reading about problems with older throttle bodies that were cleaned improperly. So, got a nice one via Ebay that was basically stock, almost new, but exterior had been chromed. I got it from a nice seller who told me about it – I almost wanted to pay more since it did not cost that much. I decided to replace the throttle control valve and throttle position sensor while I had it off. I also know the air temp sensor on the intake was still original to the car, so I got that too. I ordered the wrong gasket for re-installing the throttle body but the right one came yesterday, so this afternoon I put it all back together. It’s a totally different animal now. She’s back to basically stock but has the V8 power that a 1994 5.0 HP engine should have. She would smoke the tires (but there’s less than 500 miles on the engine so none of that foolishness – at least not yet). It may seem like I through a lot of parts at it. Well, replacing the engine was not cheap but the other stuff came from Amazon, Ebay, and RockAuto and ALL those parts were top quality AND inexpensive (Hint: price OEM parts at Amazon and RockAuto – they often have the name brand (Motorcraft for a Ford)parts at really good prices! I’ll keep tweaking minor stuff but now I need to trace down a problem with my 08 Bullit that wants to throw a P0171 code from time to time 🙂

And ERIC – now that my 94 V8 5.0 HO is running right, I can tell you it would be a great idea of the Fairmont. But like you have said – start with a good re-manufactured engine.
