Hellow again, My friend broght up a good question when I was taking him home monday night. His question was “has the transmition fluid been changed?” My answer is no, not to my knowlege anyway. My question here is; since I have a manual, does the same idea apply with manual’s as to automatics? like if it’s never been changed, that I know of if I go to change it, would it possibly fail?? I don’t want to do anything with it since it’s shifting perfectly fine and I checked the fluid and it was good. I just don’t want to put in fresh fluid and have it fail on me. that would just be way to expensive right now…

Transmission oil change need to be change each 50 000 Km. Some model require to change the transmission filter too because is clogged whit residue that cause pressure problem in automatic transmission and cause snippy (more long time) shifting between each gear. You need to use OEM (original equipment manufacture) ATF (automatic transmission fluid) for automatic transmission and manual transmission fluid for the same reason. If you buy a 1/4 pint of ATF, you should be able to see a darker color in you transmission then the color in the bottle if you transmission oil is too old and need to be change. See the video below to know how. I sugest to you to have the repair manual for your car.

I believe in changing manual trans fluid.
see what your manual states. Will it cause
a problem. I can’t give you a yes or no answer.
its less likely on a manual in my opinion.

Then I will have to do that when I buy a manual for it…but for now the transmition feels fine…I was just wondering about it.

I think the OP was asking if changing the transmission fluid on a manual transmission would cause it to fail if it has been neglected a long time, as is often reported to be the case with automatic transmissions.

I am curious what this answer is. Thanks.

Changing fluid on a manual trans. shouldn’t make it fail. There are no pumps or valve bodies or torque converters to affect.

My mom’ car is a Hyudai Elntara 1999, she bought from a freind( need tlc). I’m a backyard mechanic self taugh because of need. I’m starting college for mechanic in may. My mom’s car has a tranimisson leak I believe under the bumper( yes, hit the curb while parking so low to ground. lol). It take a bottle of transmission fuild on long trips or every two weeks. It acts like it doesn’t want to switch gears, & at stop signs it try to stall out. It hasn’t had a transmisson oil change in the last 5 yrs. of ownership. Is the oil change part of the problem? Still learning so any suggestions are welcome.

Most of the vehicles I’ve had have been automatics, I’ve always had the fluid changed in them at least once every couple years.

Recently, well the past 8 years I’ve had a few different vehicles with manual transmissions. Here’s my opinion on them, and fluid changes. If your transmission or any other part of your vehicle has a drain plug, its meant to be changed. Even if your transmission doesn’t have a drain plug, you can most likely remove the oil pan on the transmission and drain and refill it somehow. When I get a used vehicle from anyone I always drain and refill all the fluids from front to back because you never know how the previous owner treated the vehicle, and fluids are far cheaper than replacement components especially engines and transmissions.

Be sure you check the specifications for your transmission though, some require gear oil while others actually require automatic transmission fluid even though its a manual transmission. Some of the transmissions have tighter tolerances and using gear oil its too thick to properly get into all the internal components and will not properly lubricate the parts, automatic transmission fluid is thinner so it seems to work better in some applications.

Top : Next time, to have much reply on you question, you can post It on the forum whit your proper question. You just need to copy and past you text you already wrote.

Where the problem come from : Normally, transmission are tough. I don’t think you transmission leak become It hit something on the road. I sure It’s a transmission gasket that need to be change. Leaks happen when the transmission over pressure and did not evacuate the fluid that create that pressure ( overfill transmission) . To avoid overfill transmission, you need to run the engine and put transmission oil in the dip stick entry as you can see in the video above. Then when the oil reach HOT in the dip stick, you are good. You need as well to have a clean transmission hose that is located behind the intake manifold. Most of the time, when It’s dirty, the pressure is not evacuated and leaks happens.

Solution : You need to change the fail gasket and even to change all the transmission if you clean you transmission and put the right amount of oil and you still have shifting issues (cost as mush as a fail head gasket). You might try cheaper solution first.Change your transmission oil whit or without tool ( Oil change tool above the hood). Change the transmission filter if you have one on you car model (Car manual link). Add the Tran-X and then add the transmission fluid (ATF for automatic transmission). Trans-X is the best and Lucas Automatic transmission conditioner is good choice if you can’t find the Tran-x. Trans-X product link. After 1000 kilometers, you can repeat the process above to clean all the gunk in the button the oil pan. Or you can use a oil change tool to get only 1 quart of oil from the button of the oil pan. Whit the tool, you might need to add oil instead of trans-x. It’s depend about your shifting and leak issue.
