Info: 97 Honda Accord V6 Automatic with 288k on the Engine. Always serviced by the dealers until my aunt sold it to me @ 270k. She drove like a grandma…
What I’ve Searched: This forum, Google, Honda Forums.
The Issue: My Honda has no problem up shifting on highways or just down the road. My issue is when the car is down shifting. It shifts slightly hard, and makes a knock sound, and you can see the RPM’s go up a bit.
I took it to transmission shop and he drove it around, and said he couldn’t condemn the transmission, but he was driving it mostly highway. The issue seems to happen more noticeably from 3rd to 2nd, and when driving around in stop and go traffic.
What are tests that I can do? Is this an early sign that the transmission is going out? I have no CEL lights on and I dont know when the last transmission flush was done.
My skill set is parts swapper, with some college in auto tech.

I’ve got plenty. The only thing you can do is check the fluid level and condition. Also, make sure you only use Honda fluid, if not you’ll experience harsh shifting and possibly damage the transmission. In addition check to see if you have any transmission codes. You can use this method.

I was actually watching this video today when I was pulling codes for my 92 Honda civic hatchback. Very useful.
My 97 doesn’t currently have any codes thrown, just the ABS and SRS codes. No brakes or bags, but the engines fine!
You can find issue whit a transmission if you did not replace the transmission filter located in the transmission fluid pan. My Toyota corolla 2001 repair manual wrote this : Each time you change you oil you need to change the filter. Otherwise you can damage gears and have shifting issues.

Honda transmission fliters are not serviceable. The only thing you can do is replace the fluid.
